Chilling Ghost Stories

By: Charles Dickens, M. R. James, E. F. Benson
Narrated by: Andrew Sachs

Publisher's summary

Andrew Sachs reads these four classic stories of suspense - "The Signalman" by Charles Dickens, "The Haunted Doll's House" by M. R. James, "The Room in the Tower" by E. F. Benson, and "The Bus-Conductor" by E. F. Benson. These spine-tingling tales, from the golden age of the ghost story, are sure to leave you with a creeping sense of dread.

"The Signalman" relates the tale of a terrified railway worker, troubled by a dark foreboding. In "The Haunted Doll's House", when Mr Dillet buys a miniature Gothic manor from an antiques dealer, he has no idea of the horrific drama that will be played out within its walls. "The Room in the Tower" tells of a young man haunted by a recurring nightmare about the sinister Stone family and their tower room. But is it merely a dream, or a premonition? And in "The Bus-Conductor", Hugh Grainger explains to a ghost-seeking friend his theory regarding the supernatural - and recounts his own unsettling experience....

Four Classic Ghost Stories Excellently Read!

Although short, with only four stories, this is a very good collection of ghost stories! The narrator, Andrew Sachs, does a good job reading these classics. He has a raspy voice that really lends to the atmosphere of the tales. The Room in the Tower really stood out to me in this collection - I don't know if it was the way Sachs read it, but I'd never had such a good visualization of that story before. If you're looking to pick up something quick but good, check this one out!

Def worth the purchase

I really loved two of the stories: The Haunted Dollhouse and The Room in the Tower. The other two were worth it, but I had a harder time getting into them- at first at least. They will all linger and stay with me. Narrator was fantastic. He really captured the feeling of the stories. I also really enjoyed that there was mood music. It actually really helped set the stage of the stories and gave it that extra "oomph". The stories were just long enough to satisfy, but not so long that I grew bored. I'm a little sad that there were only four however.

Four classic tales that retain the power to chill.

Would you listen to Chilling Ghost Stories again? Why?

I bought this collection even though I had read each of the tales more than once before getting the audio version. Ghost stories, especially ones as well-written as these, are better when read aloud.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Chilling Ghost Stories?

E.F. Benson's "The Tower" has always creeped me out; Sachs really sells the climax of the story.

What does Andrew Sachs bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Andrew Sachs brings the right note of suspense along with normalcy that makes the supernatural elements extra creepy.

If you could rename Chilling Ghost Stories, what would you call it?

Not recommended for bedtime listening.
