Publisher's summary

“I need help.”

Those three words saved Grammy Award-winning singer Michelle Williams’s life. After decades of sweeping her anxiety and depression under the rug - even during her years in the spotlight with Destiny’s Child - Michelle found herself planning her own funeral. Realizing that she needed immediate help and could no longer battle her anxiety and depression alone, she checked herself into a treatment facility. When she came home, she was energized and determined to check in on a regular basis with herself, God, and others.

Practical, engaging, and full of wisdom, Checking In helps us understand that

  • building walls around our vulnerability can hinder our healing;
  • we need to reject the lies of anxiety and depression and replace them with the truth of God’s Word;
  • joy can be found when we release toxic thought patterns;
  • childhood wounds need to be healed;
  • freedom can be found when we forgive ourselves and others; and
  • a beautiful life comes from living honestly.

An uplifting, behind-the-scenes look at one woman's path to healing, Checking In reminds you that you are not alone, and that God is not yet finished writing your story.

Didn't even know how much I needed this

I really enjoyed listening to Checking In. It's funny how some things seem obvious, but then someone says it and you realize you're actually surprised about it. I've honestly been feeling alone, not because I have no one to talk to, but because I thought the negative thoughts in my mind had to do with the things that happened to me growing up and they were truly about the story of my life. I thought negative facts turned me into a negative person, but to listen to Michelle, who had a different life story having the same kind of thoughts made me see things for what there are. Depression will dig out the worst that happened to you to get you stuck in those moments, with those thoughts.
It's also encouraging to listen that even after a lot of asking for help, a lot of prayers and working on herself, she's not done yet. There's a constant maintenance that needs to be done.
I’m definitely going to use the tools she gave me, and I’ll probably listen to her again, especially because even though she talks about struggles and dark moments, it is still good to listen to. Honesty is a good thing to listen to. And on top of that, she’s funny and she even sings a little bit. I really, truly loved the book.

Michelle is so captivating

I loved this audible. I really felt like I was sitting down to have a chat with my girlfriend every time because Michelle does such a great job of narrating. She wasn’t reading to us, she really brought us into her world and it was so relatable. Her stories were real life examples to what happens when we don’t, and when we do check in. I’m thankful she wrote this and brought us on the journey! 💕

Very refreshing to hear

I really enjoyed this audiobook. Michelle gets very raw about her struggles. I really appreciate how she didn’t hold back and really encouraged others to check in not just with themselves but also with people who could be struggling.

This book is necessary!

I laughed, it hit me and it added value to me. It was such an easy read I couldn’t stop even when I was trying to go to bed. I finished it in less than 24 hours and I ended feeling refreshed with a different perspective. If you are going through anxiety or depression you NEED to read this book. EXCELLENT!

Great Book

Not only do I like this book but I like how Michelle is being herself on this audiobook. It’s so refreshing to hear her personality shine through this book. Thank you for your transparency and sharing your journey. Listening to your book has taught me that we have to check in with our thoughts & feelings and ask ourselves hard questions. This isn’t always easy because we sometimes avoid the hard things but is very necessary to stay connected and present on our life.

Excellent! Tackling mental health in the black community!

I loved Michelle’s vulnerability and transparency in this book. She so eloquently touched on her own faults and took accountability for things she had done all the while reassuring the reader that God’s grace is sufficient. I would recommend this book for anyone who may deal with anxiety and/or depression as there is hope and joy on the other side. Don’t give up!
