Publisher's Summary

A sexy romantic comedy standalone in the Modern Love series.

Who knew sleeping with the enemy could be this fun?

Was the one night stand a good idea?

Well, no. Probably not in retrospect.

In my defense, I had just moved back into my grandparents' house, I'd lost my dream job, and a guy on Tinder had stood me up. It was like life had suddenly stamped 'loser' on my forehead.

So when the guy behind the bar started giving me the look...you know, the one that promised I'd be screaming his name into the wee hours of the morning? When that guy also has the perfect amount of scruff on his chiseled chin, biceps bulging out of his t-shirt, and a cocky grin you knew he'd earned in the sack...when he gives you that look, you don't bother to figure out what your six degrees of separation are. You jump on that horse and ride it!

Pun fully and completely intended. And accurate, by the way.

I fully admit to feeling sorry for myself and acting impulsively, but by the time I'd figured out who the bartender was, I was already falling for him.

It's truly makes me tickled pink!!!

I read each of the books in the Modern Love series on the day that they were each released.
This one is probably my favorite because we meet these 3 girlfriends who are each in search of a unicorn cock! Whitney and Cole's story is sexy, sweet, asking and it just sizzles!
This was the first time I listened to Molly Mermelstein. She's amazing. I loved all of her characters that she portrays and look forward to more of her performances!
Highly recommend this first audio book for the Modern Love series. It's so worth it! Piper Rayne takes you to San Francisco and this author certainly depicted the city perfectly and I ought to know since I live here!

Loved this story!

I have reread the ebook version of this book countless times and absolutely love it each and every time. This audio version brings the emotions, from laughter to angst to joy so well. I love Whit and Cole and how their story of hate to love shows that anything is possible when it comes to the heart. The fullness of the story is there and so is the serious hotness!

As to the performance, I only have two things that struck me as a critique. First, there were several occasions where a new part of the narrative or dialogue was missing the beginning of the word. For example, when she says, "Whitney," all I heard was, "itney." This may have been a technical issue, like the recording had a lag. Second, there were times where I could obviously hear the narrator's puffs of breath as though she was leaning too close to the mic. In my head, it felt like I felt the puffs of air hitting my ears. Those two things did not take away from the story for me. One huge thing I loved about the performance was that she captured the different characters well. I could tell the difference between the dialogues of Whit, Talia, and Lennon. This is not always my experience with audiobooks. It made my experience of listening to The Bartender more enjoyable.

I have high hopes for more audio versions of Piper Rayne's books! This was so much fun and Piper Rayne rocks!

Audible version was okay

Reading version is great! Audible, not so much. Didn't really care for the voice and couldn't tell when characters changed.

Did not care for narrator

It makes a difference in a book when you have a narrator that flows seamlessly from one character to another, however this narrator sounded exactly the same while reading the H and the h. Her voice did not change much at all. It was aggravating!

Would be better with different narrator

the story itself was good enough. But the narrator didn't even try to do different voices, except for the grandparents, which both sound the same. it is disconcerting to hear the men's voices sound like a young girl. I would have continued the series, but not with the same narrator.

Audio Isn't Always the Best Option

The overall story was good but unfortunately the narration didn't work for me. Sounds crazy but I don't like to feel like a book is being read to me and that's kind of how I felt with this narrator. Also, I had a hard time following which character was speaking because the voices never changed. I'd love to experience the rest of this series but I think I'm going to have to add them to my TBR list instead of my audio book list

Fun story

This was fun listen. It was too bad that the audio version had poor quality. The sound was inconsistent. The sound was loud then went quiet then loud again. I had a hard time concentrating and was annoyed with the sound. I couldn’t enjoy it. This was the reason I gave low rating. If the audio was fixed, I would listen again and give higher rating. Otherwise, this review is it for me.

not fond of narration

I had trouble with the tone and volume of narration. it seemed very choppy like it was started and stopped alot. It really took away from getting into the story.

not for me...

I dont dnf a lot of books, and this book wasn't necessarily bad. but i was going in with escapism since it's a trope i dont read often(mistaken identity, rich boy poor girl, one night stand somehow forgotten??) but I got to three hours in, and still didnt get a sense of what the story was trying to make me feel. it's well written; it's not as funny or clever as it's advertised, but maybe the humor was lost on me. it tried really hard to be sex positive, which i appreciated, but a lot of times the heroine and her friends came off more annoying than relatable. the heroine meets this hot bartender, while waiting for a hookup, and after getting stood up, she "hooks up" with the hero, but since she was drunk she doesnt remember it? I think that trope of not remembering a hookup(which i assume wasnt such, but i didnt read that far, as most times we learn the guy wouldnt dare take advantage of a inebriated person) doesnt hit with me because it takes away a first time that could've been incredible to a forgotten night, so it makes me not care about why the hero should be desirable. again the book was well written, the narrators were good. but the story execution was just a miss for me.
