Tensie Stevens' husband is at the front. She cannot read or write and wants to send him letters, so Charlie offers to put her words on paper. She has never known a white man show this much kindness. As a former slave she is scarred, too, although some of hers are physical. She helps him recruit other soldiers, and he writes letters for their wives as well. So near to the world of war and men, he starts to learn about intimacy and women.

A masterpiece of storytelling

Robert Hansen leads you through the twists and turns of the many stories in this book with a masterful and seamless portrayal of each of the characters. History comes to brutal life in this view of the civil war era, in a way that will change your outlook on it from textbook to real life.

Great Narration

The smooth narration made this a very easy and enjoyable listen, creating a distinguishable character for each member of the story that flawlessly brought everything together.

The hardships of black people in history

This story has a lot of information about history and how hard it was for black people . I feel the pain that they had to go through and hope pease will come to the great nation.

Interesting read

I enjoyed this take on the civil war as presented through the development of the characters. I really enjoyed this book
