Publisher's Summary

Charity Stratton's bleak childhood is changed forever when both her parents are killed in a fire. Separated by the authorities from her younger brothers and sister, Charity is sent out to work as a skivvy in a boys' boarding school. Her loneliness and misery are eased when she falls deeply in love with the dashing but fickle sixth-former Hugh Mainwaring, but when she discovers she is pregnant with Hugh's baby, she soon realises just how alone she really is.

Determined to be reunited with her siblings and to make something of herself, Charity runs away to 1960s London and begins to forge a new life.

It's an Ok book

I've read other Lesley Pearse titles and bought this same on the assumtion that they would be just as exciting. If it wasn't for the Narrator I would have left this book half way. The situations didn't add up. That is what I found most unbecoming. LP is a lovely author, but this is not one of her best books.

A very good read

Although I really enjoyed reading this title because of it's wonderfull narration and moving storyline, I was a bit shocked by some very graphic descriptions in this book. I felt there didn't need to be so much lengthy graphic scenes and that this spoiled the read a bit for me. However the general story was overall moving and compelling.

So exciting

If you want a book with loads of variety, action and interest with love thrown in, and just the right amount of eroticism thrown in this book will meet your criteria.

Nice book

Great book to read when you need nothing taxing. It flows well with a good story. You get totally wrapped up in the story. Sad in places but a good ending with lots going on in-between. OK its a chicks book as well!

Lesley Pearse at her best

Another gripping book from Lesley Pearse, unfortunately the narrator slightly let it down for me. Very monotone.

Never a dull moment

What made the experience of listening to Charity the most enjoyable?

There was a complex story with many characters woven into it at various points that all interchange and surprise you as the story develops. You hope for something good, it happens but then another twist happens: excellent

Which character – as performed by Julia Franklin – was your favourite?

Charity herself but also John as she was able to convey his age yet make the range in ages seamless that one didn't take note of it.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It was emotional in so far as you could understand why Charity kept holding onto the three people so special to her regardless of their faults and inability to ever see how they could help her. Charity encompasses selflessness to a tee

Any additional comments?

Persevere with the initial chapter when it sets the scene as it quickly picks up pace and all of a sudden you get swept up in the endless ups and downs that life throws at Charity.

Excellent story

A wonderful gripping story, as are all of Lesley Pearse's books, with that lovely warm feeling at the end.

Loved it!

If you could sum up Charity in three words, what would they be?

Gripping, moving, compelling

What was one of the most memorable moments of Charity?

I'll try not to say too much because I don't want to spoil the story.... 1 word - Daniel!
Heart wrenching!

What about Julia Franklin’s performance did you like?

She says some words in a peculiar way (words with a G in the middle in particular) and some of her accents are a little strange... which did put me off a little, BUT overall very good.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

"The children" and Daniel.

Any additional comments?

This is the 2nd book I have read for LP's and all I can say is I want to read more!
(The first book I read was A Lesser Evil and according to many reviews, it is not her best).
I enjoyed both immensly and look forward to reading more! I have used my last couple of credits to buy the ones here and recently bougt another whilst out shopping.
That reminds me - - I must check the Kindle store *shoots off to check*

Struggled with the narrator.

Story itself was ok but the narrator's voice was wrong for the characters, no tonal changes for different ones...one woman sounded Scottish and South African in the same sentence and all the male's sounded the same which was hard when the likeable ones sounded the same as the unlikeable.
