Publisher's Summary

Jack, a sometimes humorous, sometimes philosophical ex-special operations pilot and soldier is one of the few left to struggle through the desolation left in the aftermath; seeking to survive as a new ferocious species emerges from the rubble, hungry and unrelenting. Will his special forces training be enough? Will he be able to keep his children safe and guide the few survivors through perils that now roam the world they once knew? Or will the hordes that now own the night prevail, forever removing the last of mankind from existence? Humankind was once at the top of the food chain. But that has now changed.

THIS IS MAKING MY BRAIN HURT

Well, numb at least
Reaching down with my right hand, I grasped the tab on the zipper pocket of my Bass Pro duffle bag. I dragged the zipper to my right, opening the pocket. Reaching into the pocket (side remark), I pulled out the Zip Lock Container with the four tabs. (semi-funny side remark to myself) Putting the container in my lap with both hands I undid the four tabs. My mp3 SanDisk player was laying on top of the black co-axel cable with the brass fittings. Taking the player out, I hit the blue button with my right thumb, (side remark). etc...

If you were enthralled with that rendition, than you will love this book. I bought this book, thinking it was about Zombies, even though Audible has not included it among their 15 books in the Zombie section which you have to sneak your way into since, you can't get their through browsing Science Fiction/Fantasy. In the first four hours, I heard two Zombies shuffling around. One was upstairs and another outside a house. I never got to actually see a Zombie. I did get to see some of the carnage, but not the actual taking place of such disasters. After four hours I started skipping through the book and evidently skipped over a horde of Zombies, which I don't think ever reappeared.

I did like the main character. He seems to be a good father and it is cool to have that evident in a Zombie book, if you can call this a zombie book. Most of the story takes place in the United States with this father and his kids. Some of the story takes place in Kuwait, where the mother is stationed with the army.

Sammy Davis Jr. once said, the when he gave a concert, he had to sing Candy Man fairly early, since it was his only hit. It is the same when you write a Zombie book. If you write a book about Zombies, you need to have some zombies fairly early, it is why the reader bought the book. If you want to write a book about a father and his kids, great, but don't call it Chaos, A New World and don't have a macho gravely narrator.

My lowest rating ever

I think this book would have received much better rating if it weren't for the narrator – Oh My Giggles! He sounds like The “Macho Man” Randy Savage meets Hulk Hogan every time a character has an internal monologue. It drove me crazy! I’d rather receive a figure-four-leg-lock than listen to another one of these books – “OH YEAH!!!”.

Good story, terribad narration

I decided to try this book after listening to A shrouded world. I love Mark Tufo and enjoyed the collaboration. Let me start by saying that the story is good, it has potential to be a good audiobook. Unfortunately, the narration ruined it for me. The narrator emphasized every other word, it sounded like a professional wrestler was reading.

Not bad!

Worth a listen if your into the whole z genre. If for no other reason, he co wrote a book with mark tufo and it's excellent. The co written book is a sideline to this and zombie fallout and it's great! Check out both!

Gripping story! Relatable characters!

One of the best apocalyptic reads out there. John O'Brien paints a vivid image and characters you love and root for.

the voice

great story and a different turn of the apocalypse. if you can get past the "Batman" voice, it is an enjoyable listen. the narator does settle down a bit into the book.

INTERESTING FIRST BOOK!

What did you love best about Chaos: A New World?

It's a good story, a little more military based than I like, but it was still good...

What did you like best about this story?

Jack is on a rescue mission out of pure love...and that he thought of his children first...

Which scene was your favorite?

Rescuing the kids,then Michelle...

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

this would probably make a very good movie...its got the right concept for sure....just tone down the military aspect a bit...this book was geared more towards the male crowd in my opinion...but it wont stop me from listening to book 2...lol

Any additional comments?

This has been on my TBL list for a longtime...because 1..I like the zombie genre...2 I like the ASW series....and 3 it came highly recommended...and I understand why...Jack is in a rush to rescue his kids after a virus overtakes the world practically overnight...and poof the human race seems to just have disappeared...until night falls and there are night walking, screeching quick moving zombies everywhere!!! After Jack rescues his kids, he decides to make the journey across the world to rescue his girlfriend Lynn...and he makes it! Jack is a tough one..this book is very military oriented...and I hope book 2 is not as much...because its just not what I want in my zombie fiction...some is fine...but I felt a little overwhelmed with it at times...and I think some women might feel the same way....But there is a twist in here somewhere that I feel really centers around Jack...and I gotta know what it is!! ..I think this is a very solid start to a hopefully awesome series!!!

REPLACE THE NARRATOR

I had to listen to this in increments due to how bad the narrator is. I can only compare it to the guy who does the voice over for cops.

Story was good tho...

Really, really, awful.

Would you try another book written by John O'Brien or narrated by Mark Gagliardi?

Bad story, worse vocalisation. Only managed first 15 minutes and had to turn it off.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Anger that I had wasted a credit on it.

Ok took a long time to get going

If you could sum up A New World: Chaos in three words, what would they be?

not too bad

Any additional comments?

I had shrouded world and enjoyed it but expected to because of Mark Tufo so i got this one and although for me it took a long time to get going it really got much better 1/2 to 2/3 of the way through and from there it was engrossing and very enjoyable.

I love that John O'Brian chose a different approach to the zombie genre. great stuff.
