Editorial reviews

Allison Kerby can communicate with ghosts, but her uncanny gift has its price: Allison frequently finds herself in the reluctant role of private investigator for specters seeking supernatural justice. When Allison’s late father - himself among her ghostly guests - suddenly disappears, Allison seeks clues to his whereabouts from her new client, a vindictive and vengeful visitor, his death shrouded in mystery. The ensuing intrigue threatens to make a ghost of Allison herself. Portraying the haunted heroine, actress Amanda Ronconi is animated and amiable, emphasizing Allison’s role as a caring, compassionate mother. Indeed, Allison is very much a family woman, even if her family is full of phantoms. Nevertheless, as Allison plunges into a plight of peril, Ronconi strikes an increasingly tremulous tone, rife with raw urgency.

Publisher's summary

Alison Kerby’s guesthouse is haunted all year round. Surviving the dead of winter, though? That’s a spooky proposition. Even with a blizzard bearing down on New Jersey, Alison can count on at least two guests—Paul and Maxie, the stubborn ghosts who share her shore town inn. Then there’s her widowed mother, who hasn’t just been seeing ghosts, she’s been secretly dating one: Alison’s father. But when he stands her up three times in a row, something’s wrong. Is he a lost soul…or a missing apparition? Their only lead is an overdramatic spirit—stage name Lawrence Laurentz—who doesn’t take direction well and won’t talk until they find his killer. Alison will reluctantly play the part of PI, but when the clues take a sinister turn, the writing is on the wall: If Alison can’t keep a level head, this will be her father’s final act—and maybe her own.

Always a fun series

I love this feel good series, the characters are fun and the plot is always enjoyable without being too corny.

Love books.

This one is a little slower then the others and could have been shorten a bit. But over all I like it and the evolving story lines.

Good Story

This was the best story yet, with a believable heroine that you want to triumph. She's funny and I can identify with her as well as her secondary characters. She has witty dialogue and deals with the paranormal in a very common sense un-new age way.

Another great book from E.J. Copperman! Very good!

Would you consider the audio edition of Chance of a Ghost to be better than the print version?

Definitely. The audio lends a better "feel" to the overall story and pulls you in.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I think Alison is my favorite because she's what the story is all about, but Maxie is definitely a great character too.

Which scene was your favorite?

When Maxie "air lifted" Alison to her mother's house when she thought her mother was in trouble.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed at the ridiculousness of the ghosts' antics, especially Lawrence Lawrence. He was such a character in the story.

Any additional comments?

I thoroughly enjoy listening to this book and the others I've listened to from the same author/narrator, whose narrating style is what makes the book so colorful.

A growing clutch of ghosts.

I always enjoy Amanda Ronconi’s narrations.
A second chance for a ghost two to tell the truth. A haunted guest house run by a private eye has more than one venue for guests, like a ghostly experience for seniors, a great mystery for ex detectives and hey, best place for ghosts to be useful.
Love these books!

Copperman’s series gets even better.

Chance of a Ghost is book 4 in the series and the characters continue to develop deeper friendships, familial bonds. Maxi continues to cause trouble and make you laugh, but she truly steels the scenes.
The mystery kept you guessing until the very end.
Spoiler alert- grab a tissue box for this one.

This case is personal

I like that in this book on top of solving a mystery for someone else she also needs to find out what happened to her father. I just keep melting through these books. I'll be sad to see it end

They just get better!

I love this series. Great story and characters. They get better with each story. Alison and the rest are a hoot. I read the first 4 books several years ago and decided to try them in Audible. I am so glad I did! Amanda Ronconi did an awesome job. I listen every where including work and have to catch myself from laughing out loud.
Thank you both!
