Publisher's summary

Cesar Millan - nationally recognized dog expert - helps you see the world through the eyes of your dog so you can finally eliminate problem behaviors. From his appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show to his roster of celebrity clients to his reality television series, Cesar Millan is America’s most sought-after dog-behavior expert. But Cesar is not a trainer in the traditional sense - his expertise lies in his unique ability to comprehend dog psychology. Tracing his own amazing journey from a clay-walled farm in Mexico to the celebrity palaces of Los Angeles, Cesar recounts how he learned what makes dogs tick.

In Cesar’s Way, he shares this wisdom, laying the groundwork for you to have stronger, more satisfying relationships with your canine companions. Cesar’s formula for a contented and balanced dog seems impossibly simple: exercise, discipline, and affection, in that order. Taking listeners through the basics of dog psychology and behavior, Cesar shares the inside details of some of his most fascinating cases, using them to illustrate how common behavior issues develop and, more important, how they can be corrected.

You'll learn:

  • What your dog really needs may not be what you’re giving him
  • Why a dog’s natural pack instincts are the key to your happy relationship
  • How to relate to your dog on a canine level
  • There are no “problem breeds,” just problem owners
  • How to choose a dog who’s right for you and your family
  • The difference between discipline and punishment
  • And much more!

Filled with fascinating anecdotes about Cesar’s longtime clients, and including forewords by the president of the International Association of Canine Professionals and Jada Pinkett Smith, this is the only book you’ll need to forge a stronger, more rewarding connection with your four-legged companion.

An Audible for Dogs Pick: Make your dog's day. Cesar Millan shares how audiobooks can make dogs happier and calmer. Learn more.

This Really Works!

If you only buy one book ever about your dog, make it this one! While his book will not explain how to teach your dog commands (sit, stay, come) it will teach you how to get your dog to operate in the human world, be easy to live with and most importantly, keep you from ending up in a lawsuit. This book is revolutionary, an absolutely essential read for the dog owner. It shows you how to keep your dog in line - no more annoying, destructive and sometimes dangerous behaviors such as obsessiveness about food and toys, acting dominant and aggressive towards other dogs, biting, barking, whining, etc. No other book on dog training teaches this.

I read several books before this one trying to figure out how to get my puppy to behave. She knows basic commands and several tricks, but I found it didn't keep her from chasing people and animals down the road, barking at every noise and jumping up on people. Nothing I read taught me that. After reading this book, however, and using its principles, my puppy has changed dramatically and quickly.

We give our dogs, love and affection and usually that's it! Just like with people (children especially) you can't love your dog into behaving. Exercise and discipline need to come first. Exercise to release their pent up energy and discipline in the form of rules and boundaries, not to be confused with punishment. Then comes the love and affection. This is what leads to a balanced, stable and healthy dog, one that doesn't rule your life.

Keep an open mind while reading this book, as with anything that really works, it may contradict many things that you have heard or read about dog training. It explains the psychology behind dog behavior and how we can teach a dog to adapt to our world, which is much different than theirs. It will change your life and make you and your dog much happier!

5% useful dog training info. 95% filler

What disappointed you about Cesar's Way?

This book is extremely redundant. Practice calm, assertive demeanor as pack leader, and follow the 1. exercise 2. discipline 3. affection plan. There, I've basically saved you from having to read the book. This dictum is repeated ad nauseum without any elaboration on how to actually implement behavior changes.

What was most disappointing about Cesar Millan and Melissa Jo Peltier ’s story?

I didn't get this book in order to hear Cesar's life story or anecdotes about dogs that bear no resemblance to mine. I wanted a book about how to correct some of my dog's issues, not a biography.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

The narrative was fine. A little slow, but that suited the redundancy of the text.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Irritation. I listened to this book in the car for a month and kept thinking that I would gain some practical, useful information in the next chapter. It never came.

Any additional comments?

This book is like a student who was given an assignment to write a research paper and had a one-page argument, then remembered that the paper had to be 50 pages, so he repeated a bunch of garbage just to make it longer, but the garbage contributed NOTHING to the argument, but instead obliterated its clarity beyond recognition.

Success

After having invested thousands of dollars in training assistance, obedience experts, dog psychologist, and well meant advice of many friends Cesar's techniques have finally brought a new happiness to our small pack of six dogs.

He just makes sense. When we think of our dogs as loved dog companions and treat them as such, rather than little people in our home, our life and theirs have become much more enjoyable.

Cesar's way has worked very well for use especially with one of our dogs that had an aggression issue. If you've reached a point where you don't know what to do - do what Cesar says!

Great Read for Open Minded

This is a great book for people who are interested in having a well behaved and much loved pet. It is not the conventional dog training book, and if you want his approach to work, you must be opened minded, you must believe in yourself, your dog, and your ability to have a dog that is well behaved.
Having loved and owned dogs for years, I have accidently employed some of his ideas, like excersise. My dogs alwasys listen better after a 5 mile run. And if you don't have the time in the day to run 5 miles with your dogs, then he gives you other ideas on how to excersise your dog.

I loved his approach and I am using it on my two dogs, but, like anything else, it is not a quick fix, you must be willing to do the homework.

This book is not for someone who is looking to "fix" their dog, that won't happen, he can fix you and your behavior toward your dog, and that will fix any other problems you might be having.
For dog lovers only!!

If only I'd read it earlier...

As the owner of two Shelties who just turned a year old, I wish my wife and I had listened to this book a long time ago. Though we've tried to do everything right, it now seems that we've (okay, I've) done just about everything wrong. This is a great book to listen to BEFORE you bring that puppy home. Now, having said that, we are applying Cesar's lessons to our two dogs with great results. It's just a shame we're having to unlearn them of all the bad things before getting the full benefit of Cesar's ways.

Worth an Audible Credit

I enjoyed this book. Cesar has great insight into the lives of our four-legged friends, but it's a little long and his only advice is to walk your dog twice a day. If you're trying to train your dog, this isn't the book for you. But if you want to know why your dog acts the way it does, then get this book.

Made for TV Movie?

This is a great book for the most part as long as you don't get too bogged down in the life history of Cesar's childhood and emigration to the US. Also, I'm a little skeptical of this mystical "Energy" he keeps talking about. I don't believe for a second my dogs have a sixth sense that allows them to read an "energy" aura surrounding me. Are they perceptive and sensitive to my attitude and body language? Without a doubt! But, I'm not a believer in the West Coast mysticisms regarding the "energy" I'm projecting.

Cesar is right on track with the rest of the advice. I especially like his take on dominance not being a bad thing, but rather a state of being necessary in any healthy human/canine relationship. Living in the present is also very helpful. We could all take that to heart! As with all self-help books, I recommend the reader pick and choose what works well for them keeping in mind the human is always responsible for good leadership as stated in the book. I totally agree you can't be a pert-time leader in your pack and hope to see positive results.
I don't watch the cable TV show so most of this was new to me. One last criticism...I believe he does not place enough value on the Skinner psychology methods. They too are essential in strengthing the human/canine bond. Despite the criticisms, this is a great book for a dog owner (not the only one, just a great one!)

Not much more than TV show

If you've seen the TV show, the book doesn't add much and has too much repetition of Cesar's basic approach. If you haven't seen the show, Cesar's way is well explained and the examples are fascinating insights into dog/human behavior. You and your dog will benefit, although it will take some work on everyone's part, at least enough to justify reading this book.

Everything I expected

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I'm rarely not disappointed when I have expectations so saying this book was everything I expected is a big compliment from me.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Cesar's Way?

Not the best part of the book, but I found myself looking up information on the Diane Wipple dog mauling case after hearing about it from this book.

I was also struck by the references intermixed in the story. I really liked that the authors reference other dog authors.

What about John H. Mayer’s performance did you like?

Mayer's voice is great for audio reading. It is a little weird to have a Cesar quote read without an Hispanic accent, but it is read very well and the voice is easy to listen to.

What insight do you think you’ll apply from Cesar's Way?

I've been trying to think of my dog's perception of the world much more. He's a smart dog and figures things out pretty quickly and I find it interesting to think about how he interprets his surroundings.

Finally, real dog expert!

I am so glad Cesar hopped the border and wrote this book! Finally someone who doesn't see dogs as children or as little people. He sees them for what they are...Animals. Cesar uses very easy to understand terms for explaining canine behavior and psychological background.

Overall, great book!
