Story
A recent finishing school graduate, 18-year-old Garnet Cameron is desperate for direction. Too driven for the restrictive manners of the upper class, Garnet is naturally drawn to Oliver Hale, a frontier trader from the West. Unlike the men to whom she's accustomed, Oliver treats Garnet as an equal and respects her independence. His tales of adventure on the plains thrill her. And his proposal of marriage is accepted. Then Garnet discovers how ill-prepared she is for the punishing landscape of the Jubilee Trail and the even harsher realities of human nature.

Publisher's summary
A bustling port city, Charleston, South Carolina, is the crossroads of the American Revolution, where supplies and weapons for the rebel army must be unloaded and smuggled north. From the window of the dressmaker's shop where she works, lovely Celia Garth, recently engaged to the heir to a magnificent plantation, watches all of this thrilling activity.
When the unthinkable occurs and the British capture and occupy Charleston, bringing fiery retribution to the surrounding countryside, Celia sees her world destroyed. The rebel cause seems lost until the Swamp Fox, American general Francis Marion, takes the fight to the British - and one of his daring young soldiers recruits Celia to spy on the rebels' behalf.
Out of the ashes of Charleston and the Carolina countryside will rise a new nation - and a love that will change Celia Garth forever in this historical romance hailed by the Chicago Tribune as "an exciting tale of love and war in the tradition of Gone with the Wind".

This enchanting true story, written when the author was 93, is a moving tale of working-class life, the social divide, and forbidden love on the eve of the first World War. So, when she commits murder in self-defense, she flees her cherished Ireland, under cover of a false identity, for the anonymous shores of late 19th-century America. Story
The publication of Rhett Butler's People marks a major and historic cultural event. Through the storytelling mastery of award-winning writer Donald McCaig, the life and times of the dashing Rhett Butler unfolds. Through Rhett's eyes we meet the people who shaped his larger than life personality as it sprang from Margaret Mitchell: Langston Butler, Rhett's unyielding father; Rosemary his steadfast sister; Tunis Bonneau, Rhett's best friend and a onetime slave; Belle Watling, the woman for whom Rhett cared long before he met Scarlett O'Hara at Twelve Oaks Plantation, on the fateful eve of the Civil War.

Allan Gurganus's Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All became an instant classic upon its publication. Critics and fans alike fell in love with the voice of 99-year-old Confederate widow Lucy Marsden, one of the most entertaining and loquacious heroines in American literature. Lucy married at the turn of the 20th century, when she was 15 and her husband was 50. If Colonel William Marsden was a veteran of the "War for Southern Independence", Lucy became a "veteran of the veteran" with a unique perspective on Southern history and Southern manhood.

Story
In a city that never was, sex, scandal, and swordplay combine in a melodrama of manners that takes listeners to a world inspired by Elizabethan London, 18th century Paris, and 1980s New York City. Sexuality is fluid, politics is everything, and outcasts are the tastemakers. Intrigue is afoot when a Duchess, a scholar, a swordswoman, and a genius, are brought together by long-buried lies and truths that cannot be denied.

The rumblings of war in distant countries mattered little to Danny McClain. Growing up in Chicago, his world revolved around afterschool jobs, a rescued beagle, his pen pal in Holland, and the Cubs' chance to go to the World Series. In a few years, Danny found himself in the copilot seat of a B-17, stationed with the 390th Bomb Group in Framlingham, England.

A Dear Old Friend
I first read Celia Garth as a fourteen year old with my best friend on a quest to read every work of fiction in our school's small library. I connected to the book because my two old maid aunts lived in Charleston & it quickly became one of my favorite cities for extended visits during summer break. They entertained me with tours of the historic area around the battery, the local plantation gardens, the islands, & the wonderful restaurants. I was happy to find & reconnect with Celia on Audible.

Great book
I really loved this book. Great characters and storyline. I feel I also learned more about the American War of Independence and the Charleston area. Great performance as well. I was surprised, at the end, to learn it was written in 1959. There was little in it that denoted anachronistic sensibilities.

One of my all-time favorite books!
So glad to find this book is available in Kindle and Audible versions now! Gwen Bristow is a master at character development, relationships, and realistic historical details. This is one of her best, and it was a pleasure to hear it read so well.

Favorite book from long ago
I read this book over 50 years ago for the first time and have read or listened to it several times. Celia Garth was such an inspirational character and the historical facts of Charleston and that area were fascinating.
