Decent story, distracted by narration

For me this was an interesting concept for a story. What could you do if you could walk into other peoples’ dreams? Could it be a useful gift/curse to have? This book presents a plausible scenario to answer those questions. We are introduced to the main character Cat in this first in a series book, and I imagine we will get to know a bit more of the characters presented as the series progresses. While some of the scenarios were a bit too convenient (the main character just jumps on a plane to go undercover in a megachurch, seemingly without much research or prior planning), it wasn’t enough to distract me, and I actually liked the story.

What did distract me was the narration. It was sort a mixed bag. On the one hand the voice and tone the narrator used for the characters was alright. The enunciation was clear enough. The volume was good. My problem was the pauses: There were pauses in the … middle of sentences in places ... that didn’t make sense. It made it seem like there was punctuation where there shouldn’t be and that sentences ended halfway through. Unfortunately this had the effect of jarring me out of the story, sounding awkward, and annoying me so much I started bookmarking all the places it was happening in a chapter just to confirm to myself that I wasn’t fixating on something that wasn’t actually occurring all that much. … There were a lot of bookmarks in that chapter. I still mostly enjoyed the story especially in the parts where there weren’t as many weird pauses (which is why it's 2 instead of 1 star). Just…listen to the sample not only of this book but to at least one other by this narrator to make sure you can stand it.

Perchance to dream

It seems that we are seeing more and more books that merge genres. I have read several mysteries with touches of the paranormal, some of which have been enhanced by the combination, some of which haven’t. The author combines the paranormal elements with the mystery in natural and unforced ways that make this book a treat for people who like both genres.

The author intertwines the mystery, the personal story of Cat and her family, and her romances seamlessly, with no one theme detracting from any of the others. She writes with a light touch, and can express both humor and tragedy with understanding and sensitivity. I, for one, hope to see more of this series, since the premise, and the exposition of that premise both work for me, and work very well.

Intriquing

I received an audio version of this book free for review. Totally enjoyable mystery about a young woman with the ability to slip into someone else's dreams. As a P.I. she is able to use the dream slipping to solve mysteries. The way the author writes in the dream slipping makes it appear to be a normal everyday occurrence. It's a good quick read and a good beginning to a long series.

Look forward to the next in the series.

The narration was good as long as she was reading the main character but became high and squeaky when reading the other parts.

This young adult story of dream walking was interesting. It kept my mind busy during a pain filled week so I am grateful for the chance to read it.
