Publisher's summary

Maddie James has arrived in Daybreak Island, just off the coast of Massachusetts, eager to settle down and start her own business - and maybe even fall in love. When a stray orange tabby pounces into her life, she's inspired to open a cat cafe. But little does Maddie know that she's in for something a lot more catastrophic when her new furry companion finds the dead body of the town bully.

Now all eyes are on Maddie: Who is this crazy cat-whisperer lady who's come to town? If pet-hair-maintenance and crime-fighting weren't keeping her busy enough, Maddie now has not one but two eligible bachelors who think she's the cat's pajamas...and will do anything to win her heart. But how can she even think about happily-ever-after while a killer remains on the loose - and on her path?

WHAT A GREAT READ

I LOVED THIS NEW-TO-ME FIRST IN A SERIES. THE CHARACTERS ARE LIKEABLE, BELIEVABLE, FUNNY AT TIMES, AND QUITE AN ASSORTMENT OF PERSONALITIES. OH, AND I LOOK FORWARD TO THE OBVIOUS STRUGGLE CRAIG AND LUCAS WILL HAVE OVER MADDIE. I AM ABOUT TO BUY BOOK 2.

Easy listening cozy for undiscerning beginners

I want to make clear that I did not listen to the whole book. I listened to several chapters and gave up. I probably would have liked this audiobook when I was just starting to listen to cozies.

I couldn't connect with the main character fast enough for how slow the book goes along.. Who is she? Why didn't she cry at her grandma's funeral? there are a lot of books where you don't really get to know the main character until maybe halfway through the book. But those are fast-moving.
even though I did not listen to the whole thing, I think this book would be good for people who just want a light sort of mindless book while they work on a hobby. I also did not hear any swear words which is great.

something that irked to me was, at the public event, she was surprised that the strange cat had wandered off. for anyone who knows cats at all, you can see the eye roll at that.

the narrator has a good voice. But, since the grandpa was a chief of police, I don't think the voice she gave him fits. He wouldn't be like a mild-mannered gentleman. If he was chief of police, he would be more gruf. More masculine. that's just my opinion of course.

Mystery with cats!

I love the idea of a coastal city, murder and cats. It was a very charming book and I did home renovations while listening- me and my cats! The book felt long though. With over 50 chapters and so many potential suspects, it got a little long for me. But it was enjoyable and the kitty was a great character.

A lighthearted mystery.

I enjoyed the book very much. It wasn't too intense, but it kept my interest. No bad language, which is always a plus. I really liked the ending and set up for future books in the series. Narration was also very good.

Pretty good story for the first in a new series

Cate Conte crafted a pretty good story for the first in a new series. The characters were likable. Amy Melissa Bentley gave a good performance bringing it all to life. I’ll be looking for the next installment and hoping for more fun.

I enjoyed the story and characters!

Great story line, although I had a suspicion on the actual killer it wasn't until the end that it made sense. I really enjoyed it!!!

For once, I prefer to listen to the voices in my head

I purchased this audio book several months ago. I never made it past the 3rd chapter; unless a book captures my interest within the first couple chapters, I rarely continue. Then, yesterday, I was reviewing Kindle's Recommended books and this book was on my list. I thought the plot sounded interesting and the cat on the cover convinced me to give it a try. I downloaded the book, totally forgetting I had already purchased the Audible version. It wasn't until I opened the book and it prompted me about switching to immersion reading that I realized the book already occupied space in my Audible library.

To my delight, I loved *reading* the book, it was the audio version I don't care for, however. The narrator isn't bad, in fact, she's probably good, but her voice failed to captivate me. Initially I thought it was the story that didn't appeal to me, but since reading the book on Kindle, I realized the narrator's interpretive delivery of the story just didnt match my interpretation, especially of the characters, in my head.

Great READ!

Meh

This is a formulaic cozy mystery. The characters are flat but the plot is ok. However , I didn't relate to the characters. I might get the next one to see if it improves.
