Still avoiding magic whenever possible, Private Kaylin Neya relished investigating a run-of-the-mill theft. Until she found out the mysterious stolen box had been taken from Elani Street, where the mages and charlatans mingled, and it was sometimes hard to tell the difference between the two. Story
Kaylin returned from the West March in one piece. Now that piece is fraying. She's not at home in the Imperial Palace - and she never intends to be. All she wants is normal garden-variety criminals and a place of her own. Of course, normal in her new life involves a dragon as a roommate, but she can handle that. Kaylin can't as easily handle the new residents to the city she polices, because one of them is Nightshade's younger brother. On a night when she should be talking to landlords in perfectly normal buildings, she's called to the fief - by Teela.

Private Kaylin Neya already has Dragons and Barrani as roommates. Adding one injured, flightless Aerian to her household should be trivial. But when a walk to the Halls of Law becomes a street-shattering magical assassination attempt on the sergeant, Kaylin discovers that it's not the guest who's going to be the problem.

Kaylin wasn’t sent to the West March to start a war. Her mission to bring back nine Barrani might do just that, though. She traveled with a Dragon, and her presence is perceived as an act of aggression in the extremely hostile world of Barrani-Dragon politics. Internal Barrani politics are no less deadly, and Kaylin has managed - barely - to help the rescued Barrani evade both death and captivity at the hands of the Consort.

Never disappoint!
It's a great story and it explains so much of some passages on the previous books. I read some reviews where it was said that there were holes in the plot line but I believe that if not intentional (as cliff hangers) this book covers a lot of the "unexplained things", specially regarding her 6 month absence between the fifs and the hawks. Get it! You won't be sorry! I can't wait to hear the next one. I could probably read it because they are available in print but it won't be the same as Khristine Hvam brings so much to the plate and delivery of the story.. so I will patiently wait (sighs)..

Good Series, Weaker Novel
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I like this series and would say that listening to this story made my commute more enjoyable.
If you’ve listened to books by Michelle Sagara before, how does this one compare?
This is one of the weaker books. The plot was ok but the book was long and I felt the overall story of Kaylin hardly progressed at all. Compared to earlier books it felt less polished.
Did Khristine Hvam do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
KH usually does a smashing job of nailing all the character voices but at the end of this book she started confusing the characters and using the wrong voices for characters she has nailed in the past. It was confusing because I am used to certain voices for certain characters.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
If this were a movie I would like to see it.
Any additional comments?
Don't let this book affect your opinion of the series. The earlier books are very enjoyable. I wouldn't skip this book because it does add to the story, but I am not sure I will listen to it again.

Confused
Kaylin spent a lot of the beginning on the book talking about how awful her past in Barren was, but when it all came down to it, most of the the people around her knew most of her past and didn't care. So, I had some trouble figuring out why Kaylin made such a big deal about all of that. I do not like flash backs but here there was a lot of information about Kaylin.
There’s an anomaly in the heart of fiefs and Kaylin is sent to investigate, accompanied by Severn and Tiamaris The story goes along okay until they enter the Tower and it gets confusing and bogged down with how a Barrani becomes a fief lord.
I liked that the tower has an avatar but confused why and how it happened. How / what happened to the Old Ones and the connection to lllian. Lord Tiameris found a horde, yeppie.
How she join the Hawks and her relationship with them was a perfect fit with the series and characters. It made a certain sort of sense why the dynamic in the Hawk is the way it is when it comes to Kaylin.

Huh?
It was so hard to get through this one. It didn't feel like we knew where we were going or why. All the time travel and new "old" friends it was confusing and weird. Actually i'm scrolling through trying to update my reviews and realized, I don't think I even finished the book. I completely lost interest. Up to this book I was so excited, I was talking to my husband about it and the whole concept and world and he said he wanted to read it too... Then I felt like we started spinning. Not enough action or forward movement or enough of a plot that I could follow or at least believe I could predict. I don't know. Maybe I'll try again at a later time.
I do love Kristen Hvam though.

Kaylin Walks the long road
What made the experience of listening to Cast in Silence the most enjoyable?
Khristine Hvam's voices. Over the course of the series, her's has become the voices I hear even when turning the pages of the books.
Who was your favorite character and why?
It is a close race between Marcus, Evanton, and the Archon. What can I say? I love the difficult ones.
But Clint has a special place in my heart. He teases, he indulges, he cares. I wish he had a much bigger role, but then he would be hurt or stressed or in danger. He is sweet. so I want him to remain Kaylin's good friend with the Wonderful Voice and the silky soft feathers that he knows she is going to touch because she just HAS to.
What does Khristine Hvam bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
having read the books first, I know that her acting (dramatization), subtle though it is, is the shining star that made me hoard away each book as soon as it becomes available for purchase. I listen to the stories repeatedly ( my favorites are also favorite re-reads/re-listens).
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Just total absorption. I didn't want to go to work and interrupt the story. I wanted to hurry home and continue the story.
