Publisher's summary

It is an obsession that has haunted Nick Malick for seven years - to avenge the murder of his young son. In his gut Malick knows who did it. But the psychopath is in prison for another crime, scheduled to be released in a year. All Malick has to do is wait...and survive.

The tragedy cost Malick his marriage and his career. Now he scrapes by as a PI in the blue-collar town of Cain City, West Virginia. His latest case tasks him with finding a young woman gone missing. Seems simple enough. But when his investigation exposes a link between a corrupt police force and a drug gang from Detroit, Cain City explodes. And Malick finds himself dead center.

Turns out when there's no one to trust and a whole lot of people want you dead, survival and revenge aren't so easy.

Cash City is Jonathan Fredrick's debut novel, heralding a tough new voice in crime fiction.

Great New Series

Every so often I like to try a new author and / or narrator. Sometimes you strike gold and other times hours of your life drift past in grey torpor. With Jonathan Fredrick's Cash City read by Ari Fliakos we're definitely talking about a golden aura permeating my ears. It's very much in the classic style of the downtrodden PI working against the odds but with an edge due to Malick's vengeful purpose.

The narration is near-perfect for that style and the combination of author and narrator produces some powerful moments. A discussion with the father of the murdered girl as that case concludes will tug at the heart strings and the final decisive encounter for Malick builds fantastic tension and delivers some chillingly cruel intent before an exciting conclusion.

This is a very satisfying production and one that deserves a decent audience. Looking forward to the next installment from this author

Reads like a well seasoned author!

WOW! I am so impressed with this dark noir novel. I can't believe this is a debut and I really hope it will become a series. Very good storyline, part funny, part sad all of it entertaining. No lulls throughout. No fillers and well fleshed out characters. I won't repeat what this book is about as there are enough reviews doing that as well as the synopsis.
Ari Fliakos does an outstanding job narrating.
This book is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Out of the park!!

I never do reviews however this book is so good I couldn't resist. I am a huge James Lee Burke fan and I couldn't help but think of how this author is right up there with him. throw in the narrator and you have in my opinion a Burke/Patton story. the narrator was phenomenal the story was phenomenal this author was obviously phenomenal everything was just phenomenal. can't wait for more books from this guy.

New Hard-Boiled Crime Fiction with Heart

What made the experience of listening to Cash City the most enjoyable?

A Classic Noir Detective, in the mold of the great Phillip Marlowe and Sam Spade in a Present Day Setting with a modern twist: Despite his hardened, tough guy veneer, "Cash City's" Nick Malick is a tragic, deeply wounded hero, whose cynicism covers a wellspring of raw emotion. Jonathan Fredrick explores the dark underbelly of present-day corruption and the illegal drug trade epidemic that has infected even the most seemingly innocent in mid-America's heartland. Fredrick has a terse, compelling writing style reminiscent of Elmore Leonard...but with more visceral passion and poignancy.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Cash City?

Nick's relationship with the kid, the wry humor of Jonathan Fredrick's dialogue, the hero's heartbreaking grief over the loss of his son - His climactic confrontation with the killer who destroyed his family and everything Nick ever loved. Despite the final, cathartic battle, "Cash City" ends on a funny, uplifting, and bittersweet note of Hope for the Future.

What about Ari Fliakos’s performance did you like?

Fliako has the perfect, tough guy voice for the flawed, sarcastic Nick Malick, while seamlessly and naturally slipping into the voices of the other characters and supporting players. Everything plays very Real - Never a forced moment.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

When the American Dream turns into an Obsessive Nightmare...the only cure is Revenge.

Any additional comments?

By transforming the traditional Private Detective into an emotional Present-Day hero in a deeply-layered plot that reflects current 21st Century problems, Jonathan Fredrick has created a fresh new take on classic crime fiction. I look forward to reading the further adventures of Nick Malick in an exciting, heartfelt sequel to "Cash City"

Raw and Compelling Detective Fiction

Nick Malick suffers every parent's nightmare. I couldn't help but root for his chance at retribution. Amazing dialogue keeps the read fast-paced as Nick maneuvers his way through a crime-ridden town afflicted by a turf war between drug lords from Detroit and a small-town police force. Great debut novel! Looking forward to more from Jonathan Fredrick!

Great Story, Great Narration, Great Experience

Cash City is a hard core, fast paced novel. Its smart, dark in humor and features a fantastic new detective. The narration of Ari Fliasko brings it all to life.

Nck Malick is a former policeman who lost everything after the murder of his young son at the hands of a pedaphile. Now he is an alcoholic P.I. waiting for his son's killer to be released from prison. As he waits he works small jobs biding his time.

Nick takes on a missing girl case that leads him straight into a drug war. The case exposes Nick's saavy and genious as a detective. Cash City features great police work, inner departmental politics, dirty cops and great characters.

Loved every minute of it! Highly recommend.

I really enjoyed this! Mr. Fredrick tells a compelling story with twists and turns that feel real, not forced. His main character is sympathetic and even likable despite his many flaws. The plot is new and original for a genre that can often feel like you're heard the basic story before -- this one tells the classic detective thriller in a new way, while giving off that old school noir vibe. Another reviewer mentioned that the language was a turn off -- I didn't find this to be so at all. I would liken it more to the difference between watching a show on Network television (like CBS OR NBC) vs one on HBO or Netflix -- the language felt real and authentic to the story/characters rather than watered down for sensitive ears. It is more like watching The Wire or True Detective over something like NCIS. Like anything else, it isn't for everyone, but if you like crime fiction or a gripping thriller Cash City provides a really well written compelling ride!

Salty Dog Guy Book

The plot was good and the characters true to form for some, I suppose . I really like Mr. Fliakos. His voice is pleasant and he can match the spoken word to the action. It was the language that turned me off. Mr Fredrick likes the "F Bomb" very much; instead of just a sprinkling of the word there was a deluge as well as other vulgarities. In my opinion Jonathan Fredrick did himself no favors using such raw language. I am no prude but it seems to me the plot and the characters were interesting enough to stand on their own without all the "F's", G--damns and other off color phrasing.

Great PI novel with great narration!

Several 5 star reviews of Cash City have already been posted. The story is a sad and dark one. It is also one of the best I have listened to recently. When on considers that this is author Jonathan Fredrick's debut novel, the quality is incredibly good. Narration is as good as the novel.

4.42 stars.....dark but somehow still funny

Ari Fliakos is the best narrator on Audible. He is the reason I downloaded Cash City, that and the fact it was a Daily Deal. I wasn't expecting a lot, but I was pleasantly surprised. The author, Jonathan Fredrick, wrote a good story here. It should be dark, considering the subject matter, but somehow the humor combined with Fliakos' narration style makes the story fun to listen to. I recommend this to anyone looking for an engaging story that will keep your attention from beginning to end. The story falls off a little in the second half, but this is a minor dip. There's a lot to like about this one.
