Absolutely loved it

This book had me feel as though I was right there in the story. The narrator did a great job with adding feeling and expressions to to his words. I love Native American stories and this one has quickly became my favorite.

Forsaking All Others

One imagines the horrors suffered by settlers attacked by wild, rampaging Indians (alternatively, peaceful tribesmen defending their homesteads against evil, greedy, white-skinned devils who denuded the landscape, destroyed the environment, and wiped out the local flora and fauna with abandon while slaughtering the innocent prior inhabitants of the land). Okay, that just slipped out, but rather presents the extremes of thought extant both then and now regarding the (largely European) takeover of the Americas. (And don't get your shorts in a twist over that name! He was a well-respected cartographer.)

And yet that does set the stage for the horror Maria felt as she watched her husband and others in the wagon train headed for Cutter's Creek attacked and slaughtered before she was taken captive and brought to an Indian village. What is beautifully brought out in this story is not just that captives were NOT universally mistreated but were often integrated into the tribe to the extent they allowed. Language and lifestyle differences notwithstanding, if you think of the life of a plainswoman, hauling water and wood, scrubbing clothes in the creek, manually gardening (no rototillers!), cleaning, living a hardscrabble existance, and then compare and contrast with what a women in a native tribe would have been doing--gee, it is more compare than contrast, isn't it? Yes, the wealthier townies back East might have had indoor water (but chamberpots and outdoor privies would still have been the norm) and servants handling the more arduous chores, but I suspect for most women the physical requirements would have been about the same.

With all this as background, I commend author Vivi Holt for her obviously meticulous attention to detail and attempt to present fairly the existing conditions which form the setting for this love story. As narrated by Paul Curtis, one is swept into the mind and thoughts of our heroine as she fights to preserve her sense of self in the midst of the bewildering and drastic changes in her life.

Cutter's Creek series continues!

After being attacked by Indians and her husband killed, Maria Holloway finds herself a captive of the Lakoda tribe.
After being attacked by Indians and her husband murdered, Maria Holloway finds herself a captive of a Lakota tribe.

Bodaway, the chief's son is not happy with the attack on the wagon train and is lonely and angry, but also finds it hard to not protect the white woman whom his fellow warriors stole her away from her culture and people.

As two cultures collide, will love, forgiveness and trust build a bridge between two wounded hearts?

Though not my favorite book by Vivi, it is still a good book. I personally just did not connect with this one as I have others. This is also the first book that I have read where a white captive was treated so well and accepted by so many of the tribe, but once I set that aside, I enjoyed the book more. Paul Curtis does he typical, amazing job of narration and charter performances! :)

Enjoyable historical romance!

I enjoyed listening to this story. It was a sweet historical romance. The author seemed very knowledgeable about the time period and culture, as well as had great character development in a relatively short amount of time. The narrator did a good job as well. Captivated

Captivated by Vivi Holt is an original story. I didn't expect the direction the book would take when I first start listening. Historical romances by this author are always captivating and clean. I enjoyed the fact that Maria and Bodaway gave a great look at tribe life and took time to know one another. The ending of this book was outstanding. Paul Curtis did a good job with his narration.

Touching Romance

I have read others out of the Cutter's Creek series and really enjoyed them. I was excited to find out what came of Marie after her husband was killed by indains and she was kidnapped. The clean historical romance style is true to the rest of the series but this one is extra fun because of the big culture divide and how she has to adapt to survive. If you are a fan of clean historical romances and Vivi Holt then you won't be disappointed with this story... it's a must read.

Captivated

Maria is captured by the Lakota after they kill her husband. Her life is quite interesting from this point on. She ponders all the what ifs. She slowly adapts to their life and is put before the tribe, like an auction to be someones wife. She is so scared the man that killed her husband will end up with her, when Bodaway steps and and requests she be his. The story gives you a great look into the life of the tribe and the struggles of leaving what your used to. Especially when everyone says its wrong. Nice job on the narration.

I was Captivated by Maria and Boda

This story starts with Maria Holloway being taken captive by a band of Lakota Indians who have attacked the wagon train she, her husband Fred, were traveling with on their journey to Cutter’s Creek. During the ambushed Fred was killed and Maria saw it happen. The surviving members of the wagon train have never given up on Maria being found especially Sheriff Clifford Brentwood who married Camilla Brown.

Maria Holloway has to learn to adjust to life as a captive of the Lakota, but she vows that one day she will escape and go home. But where is home? With Fred dead and her parents in England, where could she go? During the first six months of her life with the Lakota tribe, as a captive, she is not mistreated and slowly learns their language and their ways. Then one day she is called to a meeting of The People and offered as a wife to any man who wishes to claim her. Two men asked for her, one the son of the chief, Bodaway, and Anunkasan the man who killed Fred. As is the custom because Bodaway’s wife died giving birth to his youngest child, he has three children, she was given to him.

Within the tribe, there are some who don't want the wasicu (their word for the whites) woman in their camp, some treat her badly, but some become her friends enabling her to learn their customs. Maria is now mother to Boda’s children and a bond begins to form between her and them but Boda remains distant. But as time passes she and Bodaway develop feelings for each other but she is still separate and Boda tells her that “The People will accept you as one of us when you choose to accept it yourself.” But could she give up hope of going back home? Or should she commit to loving Boda who’d always stood by her, loved her, defended her—even though he knew she didn’t feel the same.

One day the Chief and a few members of the tribe are out hunting when Anunkasan, the brave who killed Fred, senselessly provoked an attack on a group of white men during the battle the Chief is killed. Although Bodaway never wanted to be Chief of the Lakota, he knows it is what his father wanted so he's prepared to step up but he is challenged by Anunkasan and the position of chief will be decided by a one to one fight.

Marie alone did not go to watch the fight, Boda didn't want her there and whilst she is alone in the village Sheriff Brentwood sneaks in to rescue her and in a state of shock, she leaves with him. But can she return to her old way of life, or does she want to be back with The People? Her friend Camilla tells her “Consider this—only you are in control of your destiny. Fred is gone. Your parents live on the other side of the world. No one can tell you how to live your life—you can choose your own path. So what you have to decide is, what do you want?”

With these words going through her head she has decisions to make. The story truly captivated me and was brought to life by the narration of Paul Curtis.

I was given a copy of this audiobook as a gift and am voluntarily writing my review.

Love found in the Enemy's camp

This was a great sweet romance. I loved Maria's tenacity and her strength as she is forced to live with her captors and have to marry one of them. This is short story, but it covers many years. I enjoyed listening to the narrator who brought the story to life. Both Maria and Bodaway had pasts that they had to learn to let go. This was a very enjoyable story and a great listen.
