Publisher's summary

First the asteroid would come, slamming into the earth just north of the Montana border, followed by earthquakes, tsunamis, and unending night. And after that... Hell.

Astronomer Marty Chittenden is the first to recognize the approaching doom - a discovery that makes him a marked man.

Green Beret Jack Forrest knows the catastrophe is inevitable and begins stockpiling an abandoned missile silo with supplies while gathering together a small community of men, women, and children he prays can survive the apocalypse.

Then disaster strikes. In an instant the world they know ends forever, transformed into a nightmare realm of eternal darkness. Soon the few remaining humans are transformed as well, becoming savage things - raping, pillaging, and devouring their own.

And the time is approaching when Forrest and his people will have to leave their underground "Noah's Ark" to face a shattered world and the unspeakable terrors that dwell there - in desperate pursuit of one slim hope of survival … called Hawaii.

original post apocalyptic

Cannibal Reign is a Post Apocalyptic, and Thrillers novel by Thomas Koloniar, narrated by Brian Hutchison, and published in June 26th 2012 by Harper, the audiobook by Blackstone Audio Inc.

Warning: this novel contains – rape, cannibalism, violence, strong language, and quite frankly it’s not for the faint hearts or dreamers who waits for happy endings.

An astronaut discovers that an asteroid is coming to earth. Even though the government didn’t want the public to know about it, some people knew about it and tried to get ready for the destruction as fast as possible, while others didn’t know that it was coming. People end up trying to survive in very difficult conditions, this novel about survival in a brutal world who lacks morality and resources.

As for a post apocalyptic novel I found it to have a kind of originality, it was fun, fast paced, and gratifying.

The settings were very real, in fact, the most realistic setting for post-apocalyptic novels in my experience. The characters were well done, stable, logical, and deep, but above it all they were likable. Thomas Koloniar made me feel sad when some of them died. The interaction between them was rational and practically awesome, for me as a psychologist. What I liked about the event is that they were told in very interesting way (that could be from the narration) some events weren’t predictable at all. Full of very good climactic scenes.

The plot was logical with great twists and turns, fast paced (there were scenes you couldn’t just leave unfinished), but what I really liked was the world building it was very structured. The story focused on more than one place which gave more creditability to the authors ability of world building .

As for the narration it was EPIC and I mean it, Brian Hutchison did awesome job in this novel his voice moved me into the story in all its parts, the laughing parts, the sad parts, and the action scenes . He altered the volume of his voice to suit the situation, he gave each character a life with special accent.

Favorite find in a while

Any additional comments?

I am a big Thomas Koloniar fan. I’ve been reading his Target America sniper novels for a few years now (Scott McEwen is credited before him on those, but reading CR, I have to wonder if Thomas Koloniar isn’t really the guy at t the wheel).

I don’t know what to say without a rote summary of the plot. I know nothing of the this genre. I hate apocalypse fiction that isn’t titled The Stand. Cannibal Reign doesn’t really try to be any of those things. It’s kind of a military book and a melodrama mixed with an action adventure story. Not to mention being either very well researched and/or deliriously well thought out.

How Thomas Koloniar isn’t a bigger star as an author is a bit weird to me. I wish he had other novels I could get into without Scott McEwen’s brand (again, reading this book, it’s hard to think that’s all McEwen contributes). Which I don’t mean as an insult to McEwen. Just speculation.

It’s a very frank book in terms of the horrors of what would probably happen after a comet impact with the earth. Obvious cannibalism. But also, perhaps more disturbing, women instantly become a commodity. That was hardest part for me. Though Thomas Koloniar does leave most of that to the imagination. My one quibble with the writing are scenes where one rape victim, a gay woman, makes flirty sexual jokes with her dude buddy very soon after being “saved.” That struck a VERY wrong note. I’m sure that many people will view some of the portrayal of gender roles as being somewhat sexist. But for the most part, I would argue otherwise. But that’s neither here nor there. That’s won’t sway you one way or the other to liking or disliking CR. You would or wouldn’t have liked it anyway.

Generally it’s a tense, fun, thrilling and a challenging piece of pop story telling.

Dig in! (Pun acknowledged.)

One of the best apocalypse books

This is a great story. Well written, suspenseful, logical, and when it's over, you're hoping there will be a sequel. There are many different interesting elements in the story that always keep your interest. The characters are interesting and the situations they are involved in are reasonable and not far-fetched. Highly recommended.

My opinion?? Dead on glimpse into the What if!!

Nothing more need be said!! If you start you won't want to stop till its done!! Great vision of a possible future & tells all around brutal truths of how dark man can be, how low civilization can fall, how people's civility lasts about as lo gas the food & just how fast everything we know can be thrust into depths deeper then any imaginable hell! Don't take my word on it, enter Cannibal Reign & judge for yourself..just be sure not to forget your Cyanide Capsule!! Trust me.. You don't wanna be caught without it..

Exciting, not a story to go sleep to

The underlaying theme of the story is that society breaks down to its essential human needs; weaker men are for nourishment and women for sex. Meanwhile, in the safe bunker, the opposite is true and contrasted with the barbarity of the outside world. Too many women leave them chasing after the few men in the missile silo. Sometimes it felt contrived; of course this will happen, don't question it.

The story telling is fairly straight forward, he shoots him, rapes her, eats him etc...its all fairly matter of fact, so its not at all as disgusting as you might assume. Seemed a bit sterile, but stunningly refreshing when Marty did it. Marty (the nerdy astronomer) is suicidal and just doesn't care. So when offered a way out by his cannibal captors, just turns around, as if "enough talk, just die! BAM BAM BAM!". Just loved that part.

Unfortunately, no sequel, but at 14 1/2 hours long, its well worth your credit.

Just not believable!

The actual premise is believable, asteroid hitting the earth, and so on, but the entire rest of what I read is nonsense. I got halfway through and couldn't take it anymore. They can only take 50 people in the silo, so instead of friends and family, they are inviting complete strangers they meet at a gas station because she's "cute"?! Really? Well, the interactions are not believable and the writing is just bad. Regrettable purchase.

good stuff for this kind of story.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

if you liked "Lucifer's Hammer" & "The Road" you'll like this one too.
there were a few times i thought the author glossed over important points & scenes.
but a fine book that makes you think: what would I do?
i would buy the second book if there was one.

Who was your favorite character and why?

characters are standard stuff here. i felt like the author had a much longer story to tell and had to cram it into this length. i would love to see a new story form him with longer descriptions of just how F***D up things can be at the end of the world. even more then he did in this tale.

Any additional comments?

ok, look. if you love apocalyptic stories get it and like it. its pretty ok. but its not some riveting adventure. i mean it has blood guts and tears, no doubt. and all the good parts are good. it's "The Road" light. it could even be in the same universe as "The Road".
made me want to buy a titan missile site.

Another "Do it now, press select!"

Would you listen to Cannibal Reign again? Why?

Yes, I'm listening to an Academy Award winning apocalyptic based movie script. Excellent story line, outstanding characters, vivid narration (individual characters are a little lacking), and no unesseary filler.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Absolutely. Very few selections compelled me to live with at least one piece of my headphone in and on.

Have you listened to any of Brian Hutchison’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not; I will!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Easily.

Any additional comments?

You will not find better. You might have your favorite, add this selection to your list.
