Publisher's summary

Winner of the 2001 Christy Award, Lynn Austin captures the turmoil of the Civil War in this stirring novel. From vast plantations to the cramped closets of the Underground Railroad, it follows one young woman's inspiring journey of risk and sacrifice.

Caroline Fletcher, the daughter of a wealthy family in Richmond, has never questioned her father's right to own slaves. But after a lengthy visit to her uncle's home in Boston, she learns of the abolitionist movement. Now, knowing that slavery is against God's will, she must risk betraying the people she loves to obey her convictions.

Compelling characters and the searing conflicts between North and South create a vivid canvas for Caroline's struggle to make the right decisions. Through Christina Moore's hearfelt narration, Candle in the Darkness burns even brighter.

A different look at the Civil War

This was my first book audible book and I was pleasantly surprised. I found the story to be fascinating and the characters memorable. There were certain areas that dragged, but all in all, a very pleasurable listen.

My children even became involved in the story and couldn't wait to get into the car and hear the next installment! A wonderful way to learn history.

I enjoyed the different perspective on the war, from the women's point of view, from an abolisionist point of view, and from the slaves.

American History brought to life.

Another great Lynn Austin book. I’ve listened to this series several times and will many more. Christina Moore’s performance is excellent and brings the characters to life. You can tell Lynn Austin does her research and does it well.

Not great as history, but good fictional story

I was expecting more historical and less fictional but for a fictional example of how a Christian should have treated slavery in the 1860's it was cute. I really enjoyed the beginning, but thought it got a bit ridiculous and unbelievable as it went on. I love history, and was expecting something closer to reality but once I accepted it as cute fairy tale idea...then I could enjoy it.

Wonderful story!

Loved the narrators voice; she made everyone come alive for me. I will definitely look for more with her narrating. And, as always, Lynn Austin’s stories never disappoint.

Great book a great seies

I love all of Lynn Austin’s books and did this one as well. I would question Caroline’s action even tho she was correct in her efforts to free slaves. I just feel it would not have been realistic for a woman who had family in the war. BUT I did enjoy the book.

Captivating, heart wrenching and emotional

Any additional comments?

Wonderfully told, this story begins pre-civil war and tells the story of girl from Virginia named Caroline. Although she lives in the south, her heart sees her slaves as family, not as possessions. She gets her faith and strength from the most unlikely of people, people who have nothing but the hope God promises. It takes you through the journey of the war, both in the eyes of the North and of the South. It is a story of love, betrayal, triumph and defeat. I am facinated with this time period and have read several books on this era, but I have to say, this was by far the best I have read (listened to). I found myself not wanting to put it down! The narration is smooth and very easy to listen to. Every part of this book was wonderful. You will not be disappointed!
