CALLSIGN: KNIGHT

When a team of Delta operators goes missing in Shenhuang, one of China's newly constructed ghost cities, Shin Dae-Jung, Callsign: Knight, is called in to assist. But the Osprey transporting him to the scene falls prey to an EMP attack and is forced to crash land atop a parking garage. With a wounded pilot in tow, Knight explores the empty city for signs of life and finds two terrified children, who warn him that something monstrous is stalking the city. When the pilot disappears, leaving a pool of blood and spent bullet casings behind, Knight doesn't doubt their story.

As bullets fly and bodies drop, Knight must protect the children, uncover the fate of the missing Delta team, and defend against an unstoppable killer, whose ability to regenerate and whose horrible appearance reminds him of something he's faced before - the mythological Hydra. But he's not alone in the surreal abandoned city. A team of SAS soldiers, along with Anna Beck, a former member of Manifold Genetics' private security force, join the fray. Together, they fight - and die - against a nightmare that follows its objective to the end: kill them all.

CALLSIGN: DEEP BLUE

Tom Duncan, Callsign: Deep Blue, former Army ranger, former president of the United States, and handler of the black ops force known as Chess Team, is visiting the team's new secret headquarters. The underground facility, known as Alpha, once belonged to Manifold Genetics, a corrupt corporation shut down by Chess Team. But despite being abandoned for years, Alpha still hides secrets.

Security doors slam shut and lock, sealing Duncan and his assistants inside. As Matt Carrack, the leader of Duncan's security team, attempts to gain access, Duncan discovers they are not alone inside the abandoned facility. High tech intruders have infiltrated the base, their goal unknown. But a far greater threat rises from the subterranean depths beneath Alpha - failed regenerative experiments from the days of Manifold, and they're fast, hostile, and hungry.

While the security team are beset by ingenious death traps, determined mercenaries, and vicious creatures that defy their imaginations, Duncan and his personal bodyguard must battle the growing tide of creatures, stave off the incursion of enemy forces, and prevent the violent intruders from releasing the horror currently contained inside Alpha to an unsuspecting outside world. And as the battle rages, a bomb quietly counts down in the shadows.< /p>

2 Good Listens, One Book

Both of these short audiobooks were well done. Characters and plots are well developed and keep the reader involved wondering what would happen next. The narrating was also well done. I received these 2 books in one from FABC and I am giving my agreed upon review.

Doubleshot of Action!

Like the previous collection (Tripleshot) this audiobook consists of two standalone stories involving the Chess Team members Knight and Deep Blue. Even if you have not listened to the full-length Chess Team novels you will enjoy these stories, they are both excellent. The narration provided by Jeffrey Kafer is spot on as usual, he makes the stories come alive. I received this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Plenty of action

Callsign - Doubleshot is another set of novellas showcasing members of Jeremy Robinson’s black ops squad Chess Team in solo adventures. This time around we get to witness Knight as he squares off with a nearly indestructible foe in a ghost city in China, while former president Tom Duncan aka Deep Blue and his security team deal with a rather nasty incursion into their home base. Both stories are fast paced and action packed, as all Chess Team adventures tend to be, though I definitely think Knight’s story is the superior story. Fans of Chess Team will definitely enjoy these quick solo adventures.

It’s alright

I’m doing the entire series. Out of the 8 novellas in the 3.X order, these two were my least favorite. I wasn’t as captivated and found myself easily drifting and not fully paying attention. They were fine, but not something I’d listen to again.

Crazy Military Action Thriller

Wow this thing was in your face and rock-'n'-rollin the entire way. We go from Knight taking out a mad scientist that experimented on himself to Deep Blue on a thrill ride from the first second all the way to the end. Knight was a bit slower it's not balls to the wall action like Deep Blues story but when there is your holding on to the edge of your seat till after.

More Great Solo Adventures

Much like the previous installments, these two novellas are tight action-packed entries that also give us some great character beats. The Deep Blue entry especially helps flesh out some supporting characters while in an Aliens-style horror scenario. Well done.

Two brilliantly realised slices of adventure.

Disclaimer: I was provided a copy of this book free of charge in exchange for an honest review.

This is my first foray into the world of The Chess Team or Jack Sigler but I've heard many positive things from my Wife who is a big fan of the core novels. As a lover of both stories involving real-world military and the supernatural world clashing I was equal-part excited to get into this as well as nervous in case my lack of previous reading put me at a disadvantage bit thankfully I had no cause to fear.

Both stories are excellently written and carry a great sense of pacing which, considering the relatively short playtime is super-important and yet, equally considering I was a newcomer to the series, had enough character backstory and growth to make me feel invested in their struggles.

With regards totbhe stories themselves, I found afterwards that I remembered scenes more from Knight's than I did Deep Blue and I think this was due to have a real-sense of villainy and more character growst than in Deep Blue and my way of describing my feeling to my wife was that knght's story felt like Alien while Deep Blue was Aliens both had intensely realistic scenes of action & violence.

As always, Jeffrey Kafer provides a perfect narration of all the action including the more (rare) tender moments and does so brilliantly with emotion, grit and clarity.

In all, as my introduction to The Chess Team this has given me a real desire to delve deeper into this world and I look forward to finishing the intermediate books before going back to see how it all started.
