Publisher's summary

War. The word spreads throughout the Confederation...the long-expected Union invasion has come. The enemy is strong, their fleets larger and more powerful than intelligence reports had predicted. They have broken through the forward defenses, sent the Confederation's proud fleets into an ignominious retreat.

Captain Tyler Barron and the crew of the battleship Dauntless are light-years from the front lines, at Archellia, waiting for their damaged battleship to be repaired. Their ship is only just operational, but there is no time. The Confederation forces need every reinforcement they can get, and Barron and his survivors board their vessel...and rush to the battle lines.

When they get there, they encounter nothing but fleeing ships and shattered fleets. The Confederation is losing the war, falling back steadily, yielding system after system to the invaders. The Union fleets continue inexorably forward, seemingly immune to the supply constraints that have bogged down past invasions. Dauntless finds herself trapped, cut off from the rest of the fleet along with another Confed battleship and a trio of small escort vessels...deep behind the rapidly moving front lines.

Barron must make a choice. Pull back, try to find a way to get around the enemy, and rejoin the fleet. Or press on, strike deep behind the enemy advance, an almost suicidal thrust toward the Union's main logistical supply base...and the one way Tyler Barron can think of to buy the fleet the time it needs to regroup. To survive.

Military SciFi at its best!

What did you like best about this story?

This is a classic military scifi book, it checks all the boxes for a great series and awesome story.

What does Jeffrey Kafer bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Jeffrey Kafer is quickly becoming one of my favorite narrators, I am starting to buy audiobooks because he is listed as the narrator. Ever since Ryk Brown's series I look forward to anything Mr Kafer narrates, especially 'The Empires Corps'.

The long Road

Amazing. The second book keeps everything you loved avout the first and adds that little bit of flavor needed. This space epic drawers you deeper into your imagination and puts a grim brutal truth to victory and defeat.

Converging Storylines

A masterful blend of several storylines that culminate to a climactic finish. Great character development, vivid descriptions of settings and just a fantastic voyage. Ignore negative reviews that say “it’s not deep enough” - this is a well-written military space opera and just a fun ride that you can immerse into and enjoy for what it is! A worthy sequel to the first volume of this series - thank you for sharing your story with us Jay!

omg the narrator !!!😖

I had to read the book to finish could not get past Kafer’s style of ending each narration on a down tone and drawn out last word. He voices where good only if he would end his sentences like he did with the voices, I may have been able to finish listening. What happened to the first narrator he was so good.

Really fun sci-fi novel. Good read - no smut.

Really fun sci-fi universe and characters that are easy to care about. I want to read it with my wife and daughter.

Great book

I found this series by looking up more books narrated by Jeffrey Kafer. I’ll listen to just about anything he reads, because he has a great style that keeps you engrossed in the book. I’ve already downloaded the next book in the series. To see what the core characters will do next.

hate when they change narrators.

another good book in the series. only complaint is the changing of narrator. I did like the new one after I got into the book, but still a pet peeve of mine when they switch.

lot of action started to see some political schemes show in the story line.

A very fun ride

The story was an excellent ride from start to finish. The commander lacks a bit of common sense in some sections of the story, sections obviously meant to let his subordinates shine, but only one such section is blaringly obvious. Performance of the narrator was very good. Can't wait for the next book
