Society's eligible women are in mourning. Lord Peter Wimsey has married at last, having finally succeeded in his ardent pursuit of the lovely mystery novelist Harriet Vane. The two depart for a tranquil honeymoon in a country farmhouse but find, instead of a well-prepared love nest, the place left in a shambles by the previous owner. His sudden appearance, dead from a broken skull in the cellar, only prompts more questions.

Why would anyone have wanted to kill old Mr. Noakes? What dark secrets had he to hide?

The honeymoon is over, as Lord Peter and Harriet Vane start their investigations. Suspicion is rife, and everyone seems to have something to hide, from the local constable to the housekeeper. Wimsey and his wife can think of plenty of theories, but it's not until they discover a vital fact that the identity of the murderer becomes clear.

Every time I sign on to Audible the first thing I check for is a new Dorothy Sayers release. So I was delighted when Busman's Holiday appeared with Harriet and Peter. My tradition will not change however--now I am waiting for Nine Tailors, Have His Carcase, Gaudy Night, Five Red Herrings and more. Read by Ian Carmichael of course.

This last and longest of the Wimsey novels is a delight to me, though I acknowledge that it won't be to everyone's taste. Sayers was a brilliant scholar as well as a novelist, and the book is loaded up with literary references and quotation games. I would say there must be 200 such references and quotations by Sir Peter and other characters. The book has a lot to it: a murder mystery, of course, but also a serious romance, a comedy, a contemplation on marriage, In other words, the mystery is only one aspect of a complex, intelligent book. In the original publication of the book, Sayers gave it a subtitle: "A Love Story Interrupted by Detection" and that is accurate.

Sayers did not write about Wimsey or Vane to any major extent for the rest of her life (twenty more years), so we are free to imagine them living on in the state she has created for them at the end of this excellent, deeply satisfying story.

Farewell, Lord Peter and Harriet Vane

Narrator has an amazing facility for giving voice to the characters. THis book is very tightly written -- it was originally a play -- and the narrator did not miss a beat.

huge Wimsey fan ! NOT disappointed!

Dorothy L Sayers gives us a glimpse into the lives of Harriet and Peter after their marriage. Good plot, interesting story line, and an enjoyable read.

Wimsey/Vane. Conclusion

Harriet Vane and Lord Peter Wimsey are on a honeymoon vacation in the English countryside so there's a touch of the cozy mystery with the stereotypical village characters, but that is offset by the intellectual vigor of the main characters and the romantic storyline which runs alongside the solving of the murder without getting in the way.
The murder is well plotted and without too much irritating focus on timelines and where we're you standing at midnight on the night in question. The solution is not insultingly obvious, but the ending does limp a bit.
Overall a satisfying period piece of detective fiction.
Great narration !!

Great classic mystery
