Publisher's Summary

What if charisma could be taught? For the first time, science and technology have taken charisma apart, figured it out and turned it into an applied science: In controlled laboratory experiments, researchers could raise or lower people's level of charisma as if they were turning a dial. What you'll find here is practical magic: unique knowledge, drawn from a variety of sciences, revealing what charisma really is and how it works. You'll get both the insights and the techniques you need to apply this knowledge. The world will become your lab, and every person you meet, a chance to experiment.

The Charisma Myth is a mix of fun stories, sound science, and practical tools. Cabane takes a hard scientific approach to a heretofore mystical topic, covering what charisma actually is, how it is learned, what its side effects are, and how to handle them.

"You'll want a text version of the book too"

Probably the best business self-help book I’ve ever read and I read a lot of them. (“How to Win Friends” may be a little better.) In fact, it took me forever to finish because every chapter had so much great, usable suggestions that it took a while to digest. Includes great exercises to make some of the messages sink in. And if you don’t think you want to be charismatic — I know I didn’t — you especially need this book because charisma is about more than you think it is. This will help you in all facets of your life. Grade: A

The narration did the job fine, but you'll want a text version you can refer back to because it is so thick with ideas/suggestions you'll want to reference again.

"Better as a hardcopy book than an audiobook"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I would not recommend this as an audiobook. The author references charts, tables and page #s regularly. It was frustrating to maximize the worth I got from the book by listening to it. I would get the book as a hard copy, however. The narrator, specifically, sounded indifferent, almost monotone, and lacked any emotion in her narration.

What did you like best about this story?

I enjoyed the examples and references to other literature. I certainly got some ideas for additional reading.

Would you be willing to try another one of Lisa Cordileione’s performances?

Never. She lacked tone in her voice. I wasn't too excited to listen to her performance. I believe she did the Cabene's book a disservice.

Was The Charisma Myth worth the listening time?

The Charisma Myth is not worth the listening time because of numerous references to charts, tables, and examples. It would be easier to have a hard copy of the book or even a pdf to use the book as it was intended.

"A must have if you are in a leadership position!"

Since I was young, I've always gravitated towards leadership positions even when my technical skills were lesser than my coworker's. I never really understood the reason why until I listened this audiobook.

This audiobook explains the different types of charisma and how to switch them in order to get different results. It does a good job at picturing what is charisma and how it affects whose around you.

This book helped me understand things that used to happen to me subconsciously and hindered many interactions with others.

The narration is clear and easy on the ears. The pauses are perfect and the narrator's accent is very neutral.

    "Better Off in Print Format"

I listened to this on audio, and I have to say, I think this would be better read in print format. The author make a big deal out of actually doing the exercises presented; however, it's a bit difficult when you are listening to this on your commute and the author tells you to close your eyes! And, she references certain pages at points, which also works better with print.

The content itself was fine. Some things were basic common sense type of things that you probably have heard before, but there were some interesting new tidbits. In my opinion, this is more a book about non-verbal communication with some psychology, business and sociological aspects.

    "Game changer"

As a medical professional, creating and breaking personal connections is a critical skill that never is taught, and rarely spoken of. Each person should feel cared for, heard, and know that their situation is uniquely considered. This book is for business professionals, but in it I have found a new set of skills and new ways of sharing myself with my patients. It also addresses some of the collateral damage of being exceptional, and helps you understand better when colleagues suddenly become prickly. Each medical professional knows well, that virtually no one fully recover until they believe they can. This book offers tools to help each patient have a little more faith in themselves, their body and the healing process.

"Everyone should give this a go"

The focus of the topic is perfect for the audible format. The practice, repetition and mindfulness is something each person should master as the navigate their way through society. The techniques are already proven valuable for me and my line of work (high school teacher) they would be great for anyone at any stage of life.
