What the Critics Say

"It's about time this book was written. It is a long-overdue manifesto for the mobile lifestyle, and Tim Ferriss is the ideal ambassador. This will be huge." (Jack Canfield)

"Very interesting parts but overall average"

The listening of this book wasn't really easy for me.

Surely, there are very interesting parts and recommendation and the idea itself is a dream of many people and it's great.

However in my point of view, the interesting parts are mixed with boring and not easy to listen parts like packing recommendation, many websites and tools recommendations and I also didn't like the way of Timothy's writing. Honestly, I had a problem to finish the listening of this book.

Moreover, if you imagine that all or at least the most of people will follow these principles, it will make them not working because if everybody has time limit for reading emails, it will create significant delays in communication. If everyone wants to speak the first on a meeting to be able to leave later during the meeting, it will create a fight at the beggining and so on.

Despite it I would probably recommend this book to the most people but I would tell them not to expect too much. The book has better reviews than it is.

    "Great book"

I have a bit of a different outlook on business than the author, but I definitely learned a lot of new things and have changed my business to apply some of the things I learned. This book was worth the money.

Still, this book was not as good as "The E-Myth Revisited." That was easily the best business book I've ever read, and I've read a lot....

    "Good Book, Poor Reader"

This is a great book. However they used a computer voice instead of an actual person. Didnt like the way this audio book sounded.

"The techniques in this book work, I did it!"

I was on vacation in Japan when the first version of this was released. I downloaded it and listened to it while I was walking around Japan, riding the bullet train etc. I wondered if I could follow the steps in the book and pull it off so I could live here.

I was working in the US for a software company as a software developer, and I convinced my boss to let me work remotely in Japan. I used the techniques and methods exactly as they were in the book, and it worked!

I used the tools Tim recommended and was able to do the same work remotely as if I were in the office. My office extension forwarded to my Skype number, and many of my customers never even knew they were talking to me in Japan.

I did that for 2 years, and recently quit to start my own software business here in Japan. The future looks bright, and I am living my life as I want it. I would not have been able to do it without the book.

    "My favorite book for encouragement!"

This updated version is worth the listen even if you have the first edition because it is filled with real life examples of people who went through with the steps in the first book and were successful.

I wish there would've been some people who didn't make it and why. I feel like a lot of people wouldn't have been successful due to family responsibility. There isn't much advice for people who are married and have children. Tim is obviously single at the time of writing and able to focus on things without family responsibility.

This book makes you want to get up and do something...but sometimes reality hits if your spouse isn't going along with your ideas.

    Excellent read and resources...

    "horrible"

Read the negative reviews on Amazon. I'd bet a significant % of the good reviews are paid for.

    "Cautiously Motivating"

The four hour work week by Timothy Ferriss is an extreme and somewhat inspiring book – lots of incredible ideas and a few that would seem to be unwise and very likely to get one fired. He obviously is a smart, motivated person that has an optimistic perspective and wants to live life to the fullest. One theme that resonated throughout his book was not putting life off, not waiting until you are too old to enjoy retirement to retire – in fact he recommends mini retirements throughout your life. He points out so many areas in the modern career that are very unproductive and unnecessary – I think that is essentially how he came up with the title of his book, by eliminating a lot of the routine and unproductive activities in a typical work week, there is not a lot left. Another takeaway was his separation of stuff from substance – focusing on experiences in lieu of toys and objects obtained just to associate a person with affluence. The parts of the book that I found to be the most challenging was when he would go into long discussions on website after website after website, and I figured those would be better suited for a regular book. I will probably re-listen to it again in the future.

The narration by Ray Porter was exceptional, I believe he is one of the best narrators in the business.

"A book that wakes you up"

This book is great because if might make you realize how your life plans might be outdated and flawed. It might throw light on areas that maybe you thought made some sense (such as the question "do I really need to work this hard?"). The ideas are not new, but the way Tim Ferriss puts them together and presents them, makes you get excited about the possibilities. A warning, though, you have to get past the style of the author, and ignore what might seem like constant bragging. Just listen to the entire book and take what applies to your life.
