“Catnip for all the TED fans out there.” —Publishers Weekly

“The most insightful book ever written on public speaking…a must-read.” —Adam Grant, Wharton professor and New York Times bestselling author of Give and Take and Originals

Since taking over TED in 2001, Chris Anderson has shown how carefully crafted talks can be the key to unlocking empathy, spreading knowledge, and promoting a shared dream. Pretty good - worth a listen

Well I struggled with listening to the author speak some, which is purely subjective preference, his preparation materials were fantastic and very easy to listen to. You’ll take away some pointers on how to become a better speaker, but it probably could’ve been a little bit shorter with fewer examples from the numerous Ted talks that he refers to. But, they were helpful, and I wish there was a transcript of the speech so I could go back and listen to the ones that he references. Great book - worth your time.

A tad long.

The content is good but I found the book just went on about things a bit too much in sections. Unfortunately, this made it slightly less interesting because it was harder to focus on the content.

A GIRL TALKS CONSTIPATION TO 40 ENGINEERS

Would you listen to TED Talks again? Why?

Yes. Because I have already listened to it 5 times so why not a 6th? Each time reveals something new and relevant to me.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

This really isn't a "story" so I don't believe the questions applies. I would say the most interesting was the examples. The least, some of the examples.

What about the narrators’s performance did you like?

Yes. Exceptional.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, but it was 20 Chapters. Just a few too many.

Any additional comments?

I have always wanted to be a TED Speaker, so I started to research and train with this book. I found myself about a month later with an unexpected opportunity to speak to 40 Health and Safety Engineers in Austin Texas at a small seminar. The topic was constipation as the product I was representing is a toilet stool to help ease constipation, which is a horrible problem for 60 million Americans. I was given 10 minutes to present after lunch. I was shocked at how well I did, how comfortable I felt and how well received the information I shared was by all. Without this book as a guide I would have surely trembled and stumbled. I didn't do either. In fact, I was so confident that my set-up, rationale, and button were seamless. I even received some applause.

A book like this, if you let it, can change the way you speak to people, do business, and if you are lucky one day a TED Talk.

With gratitude.

Wendi

Helpful book

A lot of wise advice about public speaking in general makes for a great takeaway for this book. I was hooked until Chris Anderson shared about how wonderful it'll be when robots replace repetitious jobs and all that'll be like for humans are positions thar require creativity through technology entertainment and design. Apparently there will be no jobs for people who aren't creative or intelligent because robots will be doing the jobs and Chris Anderson is thrilled to no end about this while at the same time claiming to be for humanity. There's a clear contradiction here and if that bit about his love for robots replacing the "redundant" worker weren't in the book, I'd perhaps recommend it to others without caution. Robots replacing those that are not creative is not good, it means a lot of people will be very poor in the future because there will be less work for them. Maybe educated will fix this problem? Or a Ted Talk!
