Publisher's summary

Abandon the networking-for-networking's-sake mentality in favor of a more powerful and effective approach to creating and enhancing connections.

Stop networking. Seriously, stop doing it. Now. It is time to ditch the old networking for networking's sake mentality in favor of a more powerful and effective approach to creating and enhancing connections.

In Superconnector, Scott Gerber and Ryan Paugh reveal a new category of professionals born out of the social media era: highly valuable community builders who make things happen through their keen understanding and utilization of social capital. Superconnectors understand the power of relationship-building, problem solve by connecting the dots at high levels, and purposefully cause different worlds and communities to interact with the intention of creating mutual value.

How can you become a Superconnector? Gerber and Paugh share instructive anecdotes from a who's who roster of high achievers, revealing how to systematically manage a professional community and maximize its value. Of utmost importance is practicing Habitual Generosity, acting on the knowledge that your greatest returns come when you least expect them, and that by putting others' needs first the good karma will flow back to you tenfold. Gerber and Paugh also explore winning strategies such as The Art of Selectivity, a well-honed ability to define which relationships matter most for you and decide how you will maintain them over time.

Full of helpful advice on how to communicate with anyone about anything, Google-proof your reputation, and much more, Superconnector is a must-hear for those seeking personal and business success.

Very Long Ad

Giant advertisement for the author's company. It became very repetitive after the first couple hours.

Good? Some value, but work required

Worth listening to but if you've researched networking, actively participated in BNI, etc some of the material will be familiar. Definitely good to read early in a career or when "reinventing," oneself.

Mixed Messaging

The authors go between an implied and occasionally explicit “what’s in it for me” approach to a giving but wise attitude toward relationship building. They use a wide variety of sources and anecdotes, but there primary foundation seems to be Adam Grant, particularly his work in “Give and Take”. Though this book much more focused on becoming a valuable connector of others than is Grant’s publication, I found “Give and Take” expresses a much more consistent and compelling approach to reach the same end.

Over all the book was just ok. Helpful in cases buy lacking or incongruous in others. The most useful piece for me was the section on why and how to build an personal website found at the end of chapter 15.

Two simple ideas

The content of this book can be put on one page.
1. Karma: do good things and good things will happen.
2. Learn about Chialdini's research.

The book is a collection of stories. May be helpful to some, but it takes too much time to listen so I didn't finish it and switched to the next item on my listening list.

Also the narration made it hard to listen to.
