Publisher's summary

A revised and updated edition of the acclaimed Wall Street Journal best seller that explores why some leaders drain capability and intelligence from their teams while others amplify it to produce better results.

We've all had experiences with two dramatically different types of leaders. The first type drain intelligence, energy, and capability from the people around them and always need to be the smartest people in the room. These are the idea killers, the energy sappers, the diminishers of talent and commitment. On the other side of the spectrum are leaders who use their intelligence to amplify the smarts and capabilities of the people around them. When these leaders walk into a room, lightbulbs go off over people's heads; ideas flow, and problems get solved. These are the leaders who inspire employees to stretch themselves to deliver results that surpass expectations. These are the Multipliers. And the world needs more of them - especially now, when leaders are expected to do more with less.

In this engaging and highly practical book, leadership expert Liz Wiseman explores these two leadership styles, persuasively showing how Multipliers can have a resoundingly positive and profitable effect on organizations - getting more done with fewer resources, developing and attracting talent, and cultivating new ideas and energy to drive organizational change and innovation.

In analyzing data from more than 150 leaders, Wiseman has identified five disciplines that distinguish Multipliers from Diminishers. These five disciplines are not based on innate talent; indeed, they are skills and practices that everyone can learn to use - even lifelong and recalcitrant Diminishers. Lively real-world case studies and practical tips and techniques bring to life each of these principles, showing you how to become a Multiplier, too, whether you are a new or an experienced manager. This revered classic has been updated with new examples of Multipliers as well as two new chapters - one on accidental Diminishers and one on how to deal with Diminishers.

Just imagine what you could accomplish if you could harness all the energy and intelligence around you. Multipliers will show you how.

Mandatory Reading for Leaders

If you could sum up Multipliers, Revised and Updated in three words, what would they be?

Understand Leadership, Sucka!

What did you like best about this story?

It provides a framework for leading different personalities and enabling their inherent talents.

What about Liz Wiseman and John Meagher ’s performance did you like?

Clearly presented and fluent. Honestly, I did not realize it was the author since many audible books are professional voice actors.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Turning opposition to symbiosis

Any additional comments?

This book discusses Multipliers and their opposite, euphemistically named Accidental Diminishers. The Multipliers portion seems obvious, while the Deminisher side was eye-opening. Assuming the readers are mentally stable, invested in their company, and have a genuine desire to lead a successful team, applying the principles to your workplace will improve the culture.

My only negative is the excessive "name dropping" and repeated mention of accolades. We purchased the book, you've already sold us and you are awesome! Don't try so hard ;)

Helpful

I enjoyed this book. At times it was a bit dry. I found this helpful. I have seen this and experienced feeling burnout even though I was doing something I loved. I couldn't understand how I could let someone affect me. I would try gratitude/change my perspective...but I couldn't change how I felt. It was like a rollercoaster. I would get excited about an opportunity but then felt like the rug would get pulled out from under me. This book made those situations understandable. I believe I was working with an accidental deminisher, someone with good intentions but doesn't realize what they do diminishes the employees.

This book has also helped me to see ways that I can be a potential diminisher. This is important because I don't want to be the source of having team members feel the way I have. I want to challenge people but not in a way that would demotivated them, rather, inspire. I definitely want people to walk away feeling good about themselves after talking to me. As Dale Carnegie says, it's not about what you have to say, rather, listening to what others have to say.

Powerful book

What Liz (and team) have managed to create is a resource that tackles leadership in every form and facet. As a leader myself I find great insight and use this book as a consistent companion. Utilising the practises and approaches I have been able to deepen my own learning keeping myself accountable as well as empowering and coaching my team members as well as my seniority. Liz has an infectious personality, she is highly intelligent and has a great sense of humour. Bravo Liz, a book to go down in the anuls of history.

Fresh, motivating, different - pushes for more!

Nicely, composed. It opens a door for a whole new concept of leadership even though som techinques inside are known; just now they are bundled and presented in a right way.
A lot of information to digest and later implement, if you want to make ir right.

So necessary in todays world

We need a new way to do so many things in the world today and feel frustrated because the tried and true old ways aren’t working. These ideas will bring more unity and much less conflict.
