Publisher's summary

Despite being excited by and interested in the grain markets, many participants crave a better understanding of them. Now there is a book to deliver that understanding in ways that could help you make money trading grain.

Elaine Kub uses her talents for rigorous analysis and clear, approachable communication to offer this 360-degree look at all aspects of grain trading. From the seasonal patterns of modern grain production, to grain futures' utility as an investment asset, to the basic trading practices of the grain industry's most successful companies, Mastering The Grain Markets unveils something for everyone.

The key to profitable grain trading, Kub argues, is building knowledge about the fundamental practices of the industry. To demonstrate the paramount importance of such intelligence, she uses anecdotes, clear examples, and her own experiences as a futures broker, market analyst, grain merchandiser, and farmer. The result is an immensely readable book that belongs in the hands of every investor, grain trader, farmer, merchant, and consumer who is interested in how profits are really made.

An all-time favorite: so much is here

I love and devour books constantly, and this one stands out even among the best. Here, blended together, are clear and basic tutorials in business, economics, finance and trading, and plenty of the language in these fields. Grain turns out to be a great way to illustrate these ideas, deals and processes. The author reads her book, which is yet another great facet: it is just right to hear this in the voice, inflections and embodiment of a midwestern person, who grew up in that environment, then went to higher education and sharpened the tools and understandings. Her voice and content are both so wholesomely midwestern, it provides perfect packaging for these themes. This book is right in the mainstream of our economy's thinking and language, and a very fine bit of teaching, yet this is a very singular expression, all its own, unlike anything I've seen. My unqualified thanks to this author for her work.

Helpfull perspective.

Stort telling is a great way to make a point. This book is like taking a ride through the corn belt with fantastic company.

Till she starts talking about her opinpins on gender in inequality but that only lasts for a couple miles.

Delivers on what I expected

Not written for a broad audience, this book begins accessibly (perhaps too simplistic for experienced futures traders) and comfortably with instruction embedded in a narrative of some fictional farmer examples. The second half of the book ably covers more nuance and specifics of the types of grains, subtle differences and differentiation of trading structures, etc... I thought for who this book was written for, Ms.Kub succeeds admirably and even narrates capably.

An outstanding book on the grain markets

This book is terrific overview of a complex subject. In addition to being comprehensive, it goes into great detail on all major aspects of grain trading.

Will reading or listening to it make you a "Master"? No, because it's just a book (or audiobook), and that's not a substitute for years of experience in the grain markets. Nevertheless, you will have to know and understand all the material covered here if you eventually hope to achieve mastery.

Elaine Kub is truly one of the best teachers you could find if you seek deep insight into the markets for corn, wheat, and beans. She writes very clearly, and her narration is superb. I agree with a previous reviewer: Her mid-western accent is an extra bonus; it subtly underscores my impression that she knows whereof she speaks.

I especially liked the short farm stories that intersperse all the technical detail. The author uses these scenarios to remind us that agriculture occurs in a very human context, and is more than just a huge complex of numbers.

All in all, this is a great buy if you want to get involved with grain trading. I listened to the book during my walks, and now understand a lot more of why the markets operate the way they do.

Not for listening

This book is not for listening as it contains a lot of numbers and precise data and is hard for perceiving. You need to have it your hands for reference

good book, worth buying

good book, worth the credit. I just wish there was more information about some of the big players in the market, more resources, websites, etc.
there was a lot of agricultural science info that was ok, but not core to grain trading
