Publisher's summary

Are you hungry to help others through leadership but don't feel like you have the authority?

One of the greatest myths of leadership is that you must be in charge in order to lead. Great leaders don't buy it. Great leaders - whether they have the official authority or not - learn how to be an influential presence wherever they are.

In How to Lead When You're Not in Charge, author and pastor Clay Scroggins explains the nature of leadership and what's needed to be a great leader - even when you answer to someone else.

Drawing from biblical principles and his experience as the lead pastor of Buckhead Church in Atlanta, Georgia, Clay will help you nurture your vision and cultivate influence with integrity and confidence, even when you lack authority in your organization or ministry.

In this audiobook, Clay will walk you through the challenge of leadership and the four basic behaviors all great leaders have and how to cultivate them:

  • Leading yourself
  • Choosing positivity
  • Thinking critically
  • Rejecting passivity

With practical wisdom and humor, Clay Scroggins will help you free yourself to become the great leader you want to be so you can make a difference. Even when you're not in charge.

I wish I had this 14 years ago!!!

Oh how I wish I had this book fourteen years ago! Back then, the only thing available was Maxwell’s 360 degree leader. It was helpful. However, where it was strong, this book is stronger. And where it was weak, this book is strong.

If I had this book, I would have saved myself many blunders and better served people and the leaders I was under. I could have been faithfully serving with the influence I did have, instead of griping about the position I didn’t have.

Scroggins helpfully unpacks how to be faithful and fruitful when you’re not in charge. He does so with humor, relevant examples, and practical wisdom. Undergirding the whole book is a trust in God sovereignty and the posture is modeled after Jesus’ servant leadership.

I recommend this for all leaders and aspiring leader who are on the top, middle and just starting off.

Just finished it and will go through it again but this time, with other fellow leaders.

Excellent read

This was a rare treat of both very easy to listen to and really challenging lessons. It didn't bother me, but I did not realize this is written by a pastor with a strong Christian narrative including references to Bible verses so be aware of that ahead of time if you're unobservant like me.

The book I’ve been waiting for

Clay does a great job with this book. Humorous and entertaining and wise. I am in my 40s and wished I would’ve had to of spoken. I pray that this book shows wisdom into those who are younger and starting earlier. I see my career advancement because of this book thank you Clay for that.

Good Advice

This was a book filled with good advice and reminders of common decency. Treat others with genuine love basically, and when you do you will naturally want the best and work toward the best for them.

Jesus was not a pushy nor a self aggrandizing leader. He lead by genuinely loving others. Clay’s struggles with pride and self promotion resonated with me so I appreciated the reminder of humility. Probably could have been said in fewer words but, again, I’m wordy so I recognize a kindred spirit :)

Insightful

Sincerely loved the authors enthusiasm to take charge and read it himself. It helps me and hopefully others to look at their situations with a new lens to go out and start progressing towards change in themselves and their enviroments soon after.

It’s Just Like A Sermon

Clay does a phenomenal job of bringing character and charisma in his reading of his book. Not only is it full of useful information (which I intend to get a physical copy of to review), but delivers in a way that’s enjoyable and filled with relatable experiences.

This is a religious book

There were some good stories in here, but the fundamentals seem to rest a lot on a Christian religious experience. If it had been more based on logic and reason it would be a bit easier listen. This guy is some kind of religious leader... I didn’t know that before I bought it.

But if you kinda skip over those parts or replace “God” with “you (or whatever source you feel drives you) it makes sense for an experience in a non Christian church-centric world.

Not trying to say the book or content are bad! Just saying that if you’re repulsed by religion it can cause some negative feelings.
