Publisher's summary

Economics is essential for understanding the world around you. Billions of people across the planet wake up every morning and participate in a profoundly complex and interconnected global economy. How does it work? How does everyone know what to do? Why do some people get more of the output than others? What causes recessions? Why is there inflation? Why is there an environmental crisis, and what can we do about it?

Learn about these and other aspects of the economy in this short and lively introduction to economics. The topics covered are similar in scope to an introductory course in economics, but explained in a more approachable way without any math. The focus is on developing key concepts and showing how it relates to everyday life, as well as to the big problems of society.

Unlike with the hard sciences, people tend to have strong preconceptions about economic issues. But seemingly obvious conclusions about these issues are often wrong because they don’t take into account some of the deeper and harder to see connections of a complex economic system. Economics provides the tools you need to better understand these connections, giving you a new and powerful view of the world around you.

Instant insight...

Where does Economics rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

The top. I had always wondered about economics and felt highly uninformed as it was something I never chose to learn in college and then never found the opportunity to truly understand. Not anymore.

I think everyone should read this book. It's fun experientially to listen to, simple to understand, and profound to the person like myself who was prior wholly ignorant before listening to this. I've bought several books on economics here and could never really get myself into any of them.

This book, I started at 3am and finished at 7am with a profoundly different perspective on life. Then immediately posted this review you are now reading as THE first review I've ever taken the time to share after investing in 513 audiobooks here couple of years here at audible.

What other book might you compare Economics to and why?

It's clearly the best of any I've listened to as person who yearned to understand economics, tried several times through other books to take that journey of discovery, yet made no progress.

It's like having the lights turned on in a room you had been stumbling around in the dark for years. Instant insight. If only other subjects were explored following this same template. If they were, I'd be a HIGHLY informed individual and an even better student.

This book made learning something new fun, exciting, and profound in a way that has set a precedent now for me, again, after investing at this point in 513 audio books here on audible in the last two years give or take a few months.

I'll say it like this...

If you even remotely curious pull the trigger and if you don't have the same experience I do I will happily pay you back for the investment personally.

Best first econ source I've ever seen

Here is a very well-done plain-English introduction to economics. It is from a more classical economics perspective, that is, more positive toward the self-adjusting markets ideas of Adam Smith than some may like. But I would recommend that a listener suspend judgment on that, in order to get a clear explanation of the topic to start with (that all political and philosophical variants in economics flow from, or dispute with). And the price is right -- this is great value. It is a good reminder of why I am such a fan of audible.

A summarized view

It's a short summary of how economy works. A good introduction to newbies. I would listen to it again to remind myself of some the concepts.

What a marvelous way of story-telling!!

I loved the authors approach and style in simplifying complicated concepts like inflation, unemployment, etc. starting with an analogy with pineapples and avocados and pharons and slowly building onto explain the economic terms. It's a must read for anyone who does not have a background in economics!!

Best basic introduction currently on audible

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Gives a very basic introduction to economics. Although its basics on an almost Primary School level, given the current economic understanding of the general population this is where most need to begin their learning.

Any additional comments?

This book is comparable to both 'Economics in one lesson' and 'Basic economics' but would sit at an lower education lower. If your looking for basics on supply and demand, inflation etc. Get this one and work your way up.
