Publisher's Summary

Updated business wisdom from the founder of Dogfish Head, the nation's fastest growing independent craft brewery....

Starting with nothing more than a home brewing kit, Sam Calagione turned his entrepreneurial dream into a foamy reality in the form of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, one of America's best and fastest-growing craft breweries.

In this newly updated Second Edition, Calagione offers a deeper real-world look at entrepreneurship and what it takes to operate and grow a successful business. In several new chapters, he discusses Dogfish's most innovative marketing ideas, including how social media has become an integral part of the business model and how other small businesses can use it to catch up with bigger competitors. Calagione also presents a compelling argument for choosing to keep his business small and artisanal, despite growing demand for his products.

  • Updated to offer a more complete look at what it takes to keep a small business booming
  • An inspiring story of renegade entrepreneurialism and the rewards of dreaming big, working hard, and thinking unconventionally
  • Shows how to use social media to reach new customers and grow a business

For any entrepreneur with a dream, Brewing Up a Business, Second Edition presents an enlightening, in-depth look at what it takes to succeed on their own terms.

"Great book about starting a brewery"

Thanks to an English degree Sam Calagione is an excellent story teller. This is a great book about staring your own small business. Sam's small business happens to be a brewery so that's where all of his examples come from. If you've ever considered opening a brewery or need some creative ideas in your small business read this book.

    "Captivating Informative"

The title of the review may be a bit of an off-centered approach to describing a business book but Sam Calagione would approve. The book is well written, insightful and extremely informative. I'll be listening to it again.

The narrator, Kris Koscheski, is one of the best narrators I've listed to yet.

    "It was okay"

I found this book difficult to listen to based on the absence of contractions - It was like listening to a computer read to me. Also, the book barely touches the business side of things outside the experience of this one brewer and his company, and I was hoping for more market-wide examples. Therefore I thought the title was a bit misleading - perhaps it could've had a subtitle like "The story of Sam Calagione and Dogfish Head Brewery" instead of the broad "Adventures in Beer"...

    "Informative."
What made the experience of listening to Brewing Up a Business the most enjoyable?

I enjoyed hearing about the stories of how things can go so wrong when starting a brewery and how to overcome those obstacles, no matter how crazy they may be.

What did you like best about this story?

    The same as experience.

    Which scene was your favorite?

The part where he tries to bring the beer to an event and everything that can go wrong, does.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

How he overcame my favorite part.

    Any additional comments?

This book is a great read. It has lot's of exciting story telling, advised from and experienced entrepreneur, and knowledge about the brewing industry. Kris Koscheski does a great job narrating this book. The only problem I have is how much corporate jargon Sam Calagione likes to use. It can feel like I am being sold to in parts of the book, and that's why I only gave 4 stars for the story and overall experience.

"Awesome book for any business selling beer lover."

Sam runs his brewery like any smart business owner should. Stop worrying about gaining every ounce of efficiency, passion ultimately drives business to be where it needs to be.

    "Terrible self help book"

Both the writing and the narration were terrible. I have listened to many business start up books and brewery stories and this is not only the only one I struggled to get through, it made me lose interest in supporting dogfish head as a company by drinking their beer. The story is a never ending cycle of patting himself on the back and cloying self help advice. It is way more "to succeed in business take vacations and paint" than even talking about how dogfish head started. The author also keeps trying to claim responsibility for ridiculous accomplishments instead of recognizing the growth of craft beer as a national effort and achievement.

    "Deeply unimpressive"

An audiobook with a performance nearly as bad as the content. Sam states multiple times his love of great literature, and speaks of his natural writing talent throughout the book. He also mentions quite often his au natural refined palate, and trite moral epistemology. It comes off strongly as masturbation. I was never a huge fan of his beer, but I didn't hate it. After this, though, I'm going to steer clear. Mostly because he just seems like a dick.

"Too much of a Self-Help Book"

I gave this book a shot because I remember the first time I tasted a Dogfish Head 60 minute IPA. I calmly enjoyed the 60 minute IPA, thinking, what a delightful beer... Or I might have gone a little overboard and called my friends threatening ill will to them if they don't drink some Dogfish Head immediately.

I did enjoy the book, but the self-help portion, which isn't a large portion, just wasn't necessary. I enjoyed the stories behind Dogfish Head and the insight to how it runs.

Kris Koscheski did a decent job reading, until he did voices. It did not seem necessary nor did it add anything for him to do a voice for Miles Davis, Mariah, and the other people Sam quotes.

"Great read for anyone wanting to start any busines"

I really enjoyed both the stories and lessons in this book. I often found myself conflicted between my responsibilities and finishing. Luckily I was able to balance the two but a fair warning to everyone looking at this title. This is a hard one to put down but useful if you want to start your own business.

"Excellent book about the beer business"

Excellent book about the beer business. Sam has a great view on life. His approach is very down to Earth but with a strong business twist. Lots of great business ideas, philosophies and tips in here. I highly recommend this audio book.
