Personal tales of perseverance and beer making from the founder of Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.
Beyond the Pale chronicles Ken Grossman's journey from hobbyist homebrewer to owner of Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., one of the most successful craft breweries in the United States. From youthful adventures to pioneering craft brewer, Ken Grossman shares the trials and tribulations of building a brewery that produces more than 800,000 barrels of beer a year while maintaining its commitment to using the finest ingredients available. Since Grossman founded Sierra Nevada in 1980, part of a growing beer revolution in America, critics have proclaimed his beer to be "among the best brewed anywhere in the world."
Beyond the Pale describes Grossman's unique approach to making and distributing one of America's best-loved brands of beer, while focusing on people, the planet and the product.
Beyond the Pale shows how with hard work, dedication, and focus, you can be successful following your dream.
Great success story, but lacks hearty details. Take away: good beer equals sales when there are no good beers. Business partners aren't family. Money allows you to run a cool business.
He lost me on his whole "health and wellness" stuff.
I had hoped to hear more about his relationships with his wife and childdren.
That aside, what a wonderful book packed with brew science, tenacious ingenuity and a never give up attitude.
it is amazing what you can do when you have drive, and friends and family that. continually loan you money, sell their shares when you finally start making money but need moreetc..
Bless him, he is just so in love with making beer...it is hard to fault a man who loves beer...
Ken Grossman founded Sierra Nevada and worked and learned about all aspects of his brewing business first hand. The entrepreneurship spirit is amazing.
As a individual who went to Chico State, I had gone to Sierra Nevada many times. Whether it was for a tour, dinner or just drinks, I loved the brewery! Every tour I have taken (estate, sustainability and beer geek) have taught me something new. Now living outside of Chico, when we visit we take a tour and again, I'm floored that on the same basic estate tour I'm always amazed at learning something new. Sierra Nevada has trielt embodied wonderful principles from the start and this book opened my eyes even wider to that fact. They are so much more than quality beer. Thank you Ken Grossman for not only writing this book but continuing to believe in your brand even when times got tough! High suggest this book!
Great book with a good amount of market information along with the history of the brewery. For an aspiring brewer like myself this books seems to almost talk you out of trying to start your own brewery. Lots of good beer for thought.
great story of passion and drive to build the legacy of our time. really open and passionate story and autobiography.
this book was a lot of fun! it made you appreciate the struggles and experiences that craft brewing had to go through
I am an experienced brewer and still learned from the book. Reader didn't know beer.
Great story. Even if you're not a big beer fan, it is a great story of entrepreneurship. Wonderful success of turning your dream into an amazing product then an amazing business
Some good history on the Sierra Nevada company and some history on the origins of the craft beer scene. The story isn't particularly captivating, and the writing style isn't the best but it's an enjoyable read if you're into craft beer.
This audiobook hits the spot on several levels. As a business success story it leads the reader from the struggle of early days to more heady times of business success. The book is well written and narrated, and would appeal to budding entrepreneurs and anyone with a thirst for craft ale.
