Publisher's Summary

If Owen Chase can't find a way to turn his company around in the next nine days, he'll be forced to shut it down and lay off all of his employees. He has incurred substantial debt and his marriage is on shaky ground. Through pure happenstance, Owen finds himself pondering this problem while advancing steadily as a contestant at the World Series of Poker. His Las Vegas path quickly introduces him to Samantha, a beautiful and mysterious mentor with a revolutionary approach to entrepreneurship. Sam is a fountain of knowledge that may save his company, but her sexual advances might prove too much for Owen's struggling marriage.

All in Startup is more than just a novel about eschewing temptation and fighting to save a company. It is a lifeline for entrepreneurs who are thinking about launching a new idea or for those who have already started but can't seem to generate the traction they were expecting. Entrepreneurs who achieve success in the new economy do so using a new "scientific method" of innovation. All in Startup demonstrates why four counterintuitive principles separate successful entrepreneurs from the wanna-preneurs who bounce from idea to idea, unable to generate real revenue. You will likely get only one opportunity in your life to go "all in" in on an idea: to quit your job, talk your spouse into letting you drain the savings account, and follow your dream. All in Startup will prepare you for that "all in" moment and make sure that you push your chips into the middle only when the odds are in your favor. This book holds the keys to significantly de-risking your idea so that your success appears almost lucky. Join Owen and Sam for this one-of-a-kind journey that will set you on the right path for when it's your turn to put everything on the line.

The fictional story may muddle the message.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. Firstly, the fictional story around the World Series of Poker is fun and exciting. Secondly, it does have valuable information about taking a potential idea and testing assumptions. Lastly, the narrator has a nice voice that is easy to listen to and comprehend.

What was one of the most memorable moments of All In Startup?

Calling customers irrational. This is my biggest problem with the book. If customers were irrational, they wouldn't try to problem solve their "migraines." I understand the concept the author is trying to convey, but that is an incorrect statement that could lead to bias in your assumptions. The issue is really that individual actors all have different problems they are trying to solve when they search for solutions, so taking everything as an aggregate will give an irrational perception because there are a variety of issues, all individually centered.

Which scene was your favorite?

When the concept of ReBicycle 2.0 was validated and tested.

If you could rename All In Startup, what would you call it?

If you don't understand Poker, you may not like the book.

Any additional comments?

I'm on the fence about how the author presented this information. Anyone that can take the reasons why most start-ups fail and put them into a fun and enjoyable story is an extremely talented writer. However, I kept thinking throughout the book that my enjoyment of the story may be interfering with the details of the message.

Funnier than I thought

I'm glad I read this before getting too far in starting my business. I would have definitely made some of the same mistakes outlined here. Very informative with some unexpected wit :)

I have been running a business of some sort for the last 25 years in United States or in Europe. This book with its simple, yet profound business wisdom, will take me to the level I want to be running a business at.

I seriously did not want this book to end.

Words cannot explain just how important this book and the ideas written in it are two starting a company or business. if I had a little brother and he wanted to start a business I would probably give him a hundred bucks if you read this book first. It is easy to be idealistic and think we have the next great idea but we must first ask great questions.

Diana brilliantly weaves proven startup advice into a captivating narrative. Innovative and unique, you'll be constantly pressing pause to record the non-stop 'light-bulb' moments and ideas.

Have you listened to any of Lauren Fortgang’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, but the narration was fantastic.

If you could take any character from All In Startup out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Samantha, for reasons that will become obvious when you read it.

Very invested in the characters.

Something's in the story seem a stretch for what it teaches in the story. A little coincidental is all.
I liked it and would give it a 5 star overall even though a 4 for the story.

Easy story to get into and intriguing

Very easy listen. Drives home the MIGRAINE problem is the thing you need to find - seemed short and off track at times but didn't stop me from wanting more. Good story telling version of an entrepreneur and what to look for- not for someone looking for specific tools

What a story teller!

Where does All In Startup rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Great book that many entrepreneurs would benefit from if they listened to first. Testing the market follows the lean approach, and many don't understand why. The book presents it well. And, my son, who listened to a lot of if with me, now understands and uses the word Migraine problem. So I'd say it ranks in the top 10 of startup books I have read.

What did you like best about this story?

Although it was a book on startups and entrepreneurship, I was riveted by the story about World Championship of Poker. And I don't even care about that on TV and in general! The way the story was written, and the tie-in with a successful beautiful woman named Sam, keep me waiting to hear what happened next. Fortunately, I was driving from VA to Florida to help my son and was able to listen to the entire audio book on the trip. And it made the time fly by!

What about Lauren Fortgang’s performance did you like?

Lauren has a sexy voice, and the hot relationship between Owen, the married main character who was trying to start Re-Bicycle, and Sam, the hot blonde he met in Vegas, was great. Her voice added to the mental scenes.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

"A Riveting Startup Story Told By An Amazing Storyteller That Keeps You Engaged Until The End, All While Learning Important Lessons Along The Way. A Startup Masterpiece."

Any additional comments?

Loved the book. And the cliffhanger ending!

Most exciting business book I've ever read

I found this book extremely entertaining and easy to listen to in Audible. It's the most exciting business book I've ever read. The fact that it puts entrepreneurship knowledge in a personal life context makes it so much more fun and easy to digest. Each chapter title is something any wanna-be entrepreneur should write down in a PostIt and stick it on the wall.

Captivating and very useful

The book teaches about how to approach idea formulation and how to develop a business model while putting customers first. It draws an unexpected but incredible analogy between Texas hold 'em poker and starting a business. It is all written in a story format which essentially makes you feel like you've been on the start up journey with the main character. A must read for aspiring entrepreneurs.
