Netflix vs. HBO. Nike vs. Adidas. Business is war. Sometimes the prize is your wallet or your attention. Sometimes, it’s just the fun of beating the other guy. The outcome of these battles shapes what we buy and how we live. Business Wars gives you the unauthorized, real story of what drives these companies and their leaders, inventors, investors and executives to new heights -- or to ruin. Hosted by David Brown, former anchor of Marketplace. • Netflix vs Blockbuster - Sudden Death | 1 (Ad-free)
    Feb 6 2018
This is Episode 1 of an 8-part series on the brutal business battle between Netflix and Blockbuster, and later HBO. It all started around 1997, with a guy named Marc Randolph and his mathematician friend Reed Hastings. Randolph and Hastings knew they’d have to take on Blockbuster, but what they didn’t anticipate was that their business model would take on network television and eventually change the entire movie industry. This was an 8-year total war that left innumerable casualties in its wake: thousands of hollowed out buildings and economic losses in the billions. • Netflix vs Blockbuster - Origins | 2 (Ad-free)
    Feb 6 2018
After Hastings pleaded with Antioco to buy Blockbuster Online, Antioco agreed to present Hasting’s proposal to the board. What he didn’t tell him was that he was pushing the board to reject the offer so Netflix would wither and die. Meanwhile, Netflix was struggling to gain legitimacy in Hollywood. Netflix quickly realized that before it could take on the Hollywood gods, it would have to slay Blockbuster. Support us by supporting our sponsors! Lots of great business strategies behind the scene. More insightful than an MBA strategy class.

This is an amazing series. First I heard about it from a friend, but know the title, but recently I stumbled up on it on the Audible Plus catalog and realised that this is it. Listened to the XBOX vs PS and the Marvel vs DC mini series and they were briliant!
-Investing in killing competiton in building up a brand that is more expensive to make than to sell to kill competition.
-Picking the right artist for the right audience.
-How large a difference it makes understandig user interest and believing in or liking your product instead of "being a businessman" only.
The history of these businesses seem to talk more clearly than the businessmen who write books about ther successes. You can hear actions and their consequences and draw conclusions and see patterns. I did not dig into this subject and havent read Wikipedia pages nor articles on corporate competition as many I know do, so to me this podcast series is really exciting a nd fascinating, and entertaining.
And I really like the follow up interviews at the end of each mini series talking to authors of the episodes on their predictions about the future of each subjects based on current data and news at the time the episodes were concluded.
