Publisher's Summary

They don’t call us sharks for our ability to swim.

Second-string linebacker turned disillusioned defense attorney Jake Lassiter finally switches teams. Appointed special prosecutor in a high-profile murder case, he vows to take down a prominent surgeon accused of killing his wife. There’s just one problem...or maybe three: no evidence, no witness, and no body.

But Lassiter’s used to fighting impossible battles on the gridiron and in court. After all, he’s not totally burned-out - just a little scorched.

Standing in Lassiter’s way are the defense lawyers: slick-talking Steve Solomon and blueblood Victoria Lord, who have their own complicated history with the defendant. Not to mention the specter of CTE, the lethal brain disease Lassiter may have contracted banging heads in the NFL. Drained of his mental edge just when he needs it most, Lassiter must do whatever it takes to win this case - even if it costs him his life. Because law is a contact sport, and you don’t get trophies for trying.

Surprisingly good...

I'm always hesitant about Paul Levine's books. Most are very good but some not so good. After reading the positive review by Wayne (Mathews, NC) I thought I would give it a try. So glad I did. Thanks!

Even if you don't like Paul Levine's novels,...

Even if you don't like Paul Levine's novels, listen to this one! Paul Levine's legal novels are highly variable in quality. When you start one you may find a real treasure or you may be wasting your time, but more often than not its just okay. BUM DEAL is a real treasure. Although this novel is part of the Jake Lassiter series, it also includes the main characters from Levine's Solomon and Lord series in major roles. The plot is clever and fun as Jake Lassiter becomes a prosecutor rather than a defense attorney for the murder case. The audio book is free to borrow with Kindle Unlimited. Without Kindle Unlimited it is still less expensive than one Audible credit if you purchase the Kindle version first. Narrator Luke Daniels is the perfect voice of Jake Lassiter.

I highly recommend BUM DEAL.

Could have been better but GREAT narration..

I listened to 47% of this then zipped over to the last few chapters to see how it ended. I won't be reading anymore about Jake Lassiter because I'm tired of reading about his "brain damage" and his "CTE" and his mixtures of medicines and him sitting out in the park and "vaping" pot.
I want to read about the court cases not about his health problems caused by playing football. Time to kill him or make him better.

This could have been a decent book about a doctor accused of killing his wife but too much time was spent with Jake and his health and with Steve and Victoria wedding plans.

There was no sex and the F-bomb was used 10 times.

As to the narration: Luke Daniels is all that kept me listening as long as I did. He's one terrific narrator.

Same old bums.

How does he do it? Once more Paul Levine has assembled a group of lovingly flawed characters and landed them in the middle of an absorbing puzzle. In this case Jake switches to the prosecutorial role. The bad guys here are disgusting and/or stupid. The worst one in my opinion is a twisted MD. Jake’s old football concussions make his life almost unbearable part of the time. But satisfaction comes at the end or would have if the book had ended a paragraph shorter. I hate it when his books end because I am so involved with his story ends I feel abandoned. How I admire your ability to spin tales. Write on!

love this series!

Great book but a fantastic author. The narrator pulls the book together and makes it a great listening experience!
