Publisher's Summary

A banking scandal has filled the city with violent protests, and a young homeless man burns to death after being caught between rioters and the police.

But all is not as it seems; an opportunistic killer is using the chaos to exact revenge. Arthur Bryant and John May soon find their investigation taking an apocalyptic turn as the case comes to involve the history of mob rule, corruption, punishment, and the legend of Guy Fawkes.

A Mystery Masterpiece

Mr. Fowler has done it once again, producing his most intricate and engaging book in this fabulous series. Bryant & May captured my heart and mind from the first novel. These are my favorite books in this genre ever! If you want a read that reaches out from the pages and pulls you into the story, The Burning Man is right up your alley. The characters are hugely multidimensional and interesting - and not only Bryant & May. Their cadre of colleagues, superiors, friends, consulting oddballs and others are never given short shrift by the author: they emerge as the essential glue that holds the plot together. Twists and turns abound - just when I thought I had figured things out, I was surprised. Love this quality about Mr Fowler's writing. I admit to sobbing at the end. Please, please, please don't let this be the last in this brilliant series. I will be truly heartbroken if it is.

Another Fantastic Bryant and May Book

Any additional comments?

I Love this whole series and have listened to all the books several times. Such a quirky British detective series with London being the back drop to all the adventures of the peculiar crimes unit. Tim Goodman does an excellent job of bringing the characters to life and I am feeling a bit wobbly and bereft tonight as I finished the burning Man . If You haven't tried this series the books are stand alone but I would recommend reading them in order .

Reunion

This book was perfect to listen while enjoying a cuppa on a chilly afternoon. Quick stories, but enough to have a nice reunion with old friends. I so wish Masterpiece Theater would create a series around Bryant & May & the PCU!

Don't make this the last Bryant and May!!

As a listener to the wonderful audio performances of this series, I am hoping that there will be more! Without spoiling it for others, upon finishing this book just now it seemed possible that there may not be. Dear Christopher Fowler, please, please, please write more. The characters are wonderful. The quality of their conversations and their astute observations on the lunacy of modern life are non-existent in any other writer's work. Where will you readers go to find such spot on social commentary in the guise of fiction if this series doesn't continue? I sometimes find myself repeating sentences played on my phone during a run so I can remember them to share with others because they so perfectly assess a modern social issue. This particular book was brilliant in that regard and I am hopeful more will follow with the same cast of characters that I adore.

Loved the performance but...

Would you try another book from Christopher Fowler and/or Tim Goodman?

Tim Goodman is excellent!!

Would you recommend Bryant & May - The Burning Man to your friends? Why or why not?

This is the second book I have purchased by Christopher Fowler. The narration is excellent. I also love the bits of historical facts, makes the story even more interesting. Why I will not purchase another is the political push that is included. Want to be entertained not turned off by the authors political rants.

Good as ever

Would you consider the audio edition of Bryant & May - The Burning Man to be better than the print version?

I can do the ironing whilst listening to the story

Who was your favorite character and why?

Bryant, he is such a tricky, challenging and difficult old man, but with a heart of gold.

What does Tim Goodman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

lively characterisation and emotional depth.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

More of an intellectual reaction, I enjoy how the author slips in so much information on the history of London

Any additional comments?

I am amazed that the Bryant and May series have not yet made it to TV or film.

another triumph

Would you consider the audio edition of Bryant & May - The Burning Man to be better than the print version?

I've never read any of these books, however Tim Goodman brings these characters to life so well I couldn't contemplate reading them instead of listening.

What did you like best about this story?

It was as always all good, however it got quite tense towards the end.

Which character – as performed by Tim Goodman – was your favourite?

Byrant will always be my favourite

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The exchanges between Bryant and May at the end.

Any additional comments?

This one made me sad. The characters are so well rounded I wanted to give both Bryant and May a hug.

Poignant

As always a good story, well written lots of dark humour. However it's bitter sweet with the loss of one character and perhaps the demise of another. I do hope it's not the end of Bryant and May the world would be a little less eccentric without them.

Brilliant but sad

As always I thoroughly enjoyed a Bryant & May book but this time with a sad ending. People who haven't heard any of these books - start at the beginning of the series and enjoy the journey, those who have already taken the ride this one won't disappoint

Clever, thoughtful & touching

Very well written as usual, with twists & turns that keep you guessing.
The narrater has such a gift, he brings the characters to life & you believe that you are there with them as it all happens.
I love the Bryant & May series & found myself feeling very emotional & shed some tears as the final chapter closed.

Great Story, fantastically well narrated

Another great Bryant & May adventure

The narrator is a breath of talented fresh air after some of the dross I've listened to. He should narrate every audio book!

Good story, narration questionable at times.

I enjoyed this tale, and particularly the description of one character’s experiences. (No spoilers here!)

The narrator really brought some of the characters to life but, oddly, seemed ignorant of how to pronounce simple words like ‘grimace’ (he pronounced it ‘grimayced’).

Once you picked-up on this it became apparent that he wasn’t perhaps as well-prepared for this gig as I would have liked.

Overall enjoyable nonetheless.
