Story
Something terrifying is happening to the dogs in the mountain community of Mason County, Virginia. Pets are vanishing mysteriously and “missing dog” posters cover the waiting room walls at Dr. Rachel Goddard’s veterinary clinic. A pack of feral canines roams at night, attacking livestock in a desperate search for food. Now a prominent physician, Gordon Hall, has been found dead in his yard, his throat torn open. Sheriff’s Department investigator Tom Bridger believes the killing was premeditated murder, with a trained attack dog as the weapon.

Story
Tom Bridger, who is half Melungeon, thought he had escaped his mountain community's lingering prejudice against the mixed-race group when he left to work for the Richmond, Virginia, Police Department. Tom was moving up the detective ranks when a family tragedy brought him back home and moved him into his father's job as a county sheriff's deputy. Now the bones of a Melungeon woman who disappeared 10 years ago have surfaced on a remote mountaintop, and all evidence points to murder. Violence escalates as the victim's poor family and the wealthy white family she married into scramble to protect their secrets.

Story
FBI agent Drex Easton is relentlessly driven by a single goal: to outmaneuver the con man once known as Weston Graham. Over the past 30 years, Weston has assumed many names and countless disguises, enabling him to lure eight wealthy women out of their fortunes before they disappeared without a trace, their families left without answers and the authorities without clues. The only common trait among the victims: a new man in their life who also vanished, leaving behind no evidence of his existence...except for one signature custom.

Story
Some lines should never be crossed. Police corruption, an investigation that ends in tragedy and the mystery of a little girl’s silence – three unconnected events that will prove to be linked by one small town. While detective Cormac Reilly faces enemies at work and trouble in his personal life, garda Peter Fisher is relocated out of Galway with the threat of prosecution hanging over his head. But even that is not as terrible as having to work for his overbearing father, the local copper for the pretty seaside town of Roundstone.

Publisher's Summary
Two residents of Mason County, Virginia, Cam and Meredith Taylor, are murdered within hours of one another. Deputy Sheriff Tom Bridger is called in, along with his girlfriend, veterinarian Rachel Goddard, because she heard—but didn't see—Cam’s murder.
The daughter of the victims is Leslie, Tom’s former girlfriend. Leslie returns home to see justice done—and, frankly, to win Tom back from Rachel. The prime suspect is Ben Hern, who happens to be Rachel’s childhood friend, and Rachel is desperate to prove him innocent. Meanwhile, Leslie pushes for Hern's arrest and launches a campaign of intimidation against Rachel. With the killer targeting Rachel and the community clamoring for an arrest, Tom and Rachel must decide who they can trust.Critic Reviews

Predictable, But Fun
I'm steadily working my way through this series, mostly because the narrator Tavia Gilbert is brilliant and it makes for a nice relaxing bed time listen. Three books in and I rather like that between each book time has elapsed, and Rachel's circumstances change. We aren't a constant fly on the wall for her, but rather a friend popping in every few months to check to see all is well. (Maybe, a poor choice of words as Rachel has the worst luck...). Broken Places wasn't a great 'whodunnit' - I'd worked out the twist almost the moment the second body was found. It was, however, enjoyable and has left me curious as to what happens next to Rachel and the people she interacts with. Worth a credit? Probably not so much, but it is worth buying the book to get the audio book at a reduced price imo.

Good, but not Stellar
Parshall's characters are well developed and the story line has twists and draw the reader in. However, unlike her earlier books much of the conclusion could be guessed early on.

Magnet for Murder
While the story was well written, to enjoy the story I would have needed to believe that Rachel was the world's biggest magnet for cold blooded killers. Since she was actually a veterinarian in a small mountain town, it seemed totally implausible to me.
