Story
Marla Mason, ousted chief sorcerer for the city of Felport, is languishing in exile on the island of Maui with her best friend, the psychic (and rather hedonistic) Rondeau. She's making a living of sorts as an occult detective, but for the most part, she's just marking time. Driven from the city she loves, Marla is adrift, nearly friendless, and stripped of almost all her power and resources. Obviously, it's the perfect time for old enemies to try and kill her.

Mad sorcerers, psychic vampires, an army of vengeful demons, Marla Mason would rather face them all than a flesh-and-blood ghost from her dysfunctional family past: her con artist brother, Jason. As Felport's chief sorcerer, Marla would ordinarily consider it her duty to protect her town from such an unscrupulous ne'er-do-well. As his sister, things are a lot...trickier.

Story
As chief sorcerer of Felport, Marla Mason thought she'd faced every kind of evil the magical world had to offer. But she's never faced a killer like this. He's dark, glib, handsome as the devil - and exactly who he says he is. Death - in the flesh. He's arrived in Felport with a posse composed of a half-insane necromancer and the reanimated corpse of John Wilkes Booth, and he isn't leaving until he gets what he came for. Only Marla is crazy enough to tell Death to go back to Hell.

In the 25th century, humankind has spread throughout the galaxy, monitored by the watchful eye of the U.N. While divisions in race, religion, and class still exist, advances in technology have redefined life itself. Now, assuming one can afford the expensive procedure, a person's consciousness can be stored in a cortical stack at the base of the brain and easily downloaded into a new body (or "sleeve") making death nothing more than a minor blip on a screen.

The DFZ, the metropolis formerly known as Detroit, is the world’s most magical city with a population of nine million and zero public safety laws. That’s a lot of mages, cybernetically enhanced chrome heads, and mythical beasties who die, get into debt, and otherwise fail to pay their rent. When they can’t pay their bills, their stuff gets sold to the highest bidder. That’s when they call me. I’m a Cleaner: a freelance mage employed by the DFZ to sort through the mountains of magical junk people leave behind. It’s not a pretty job, or a safe one....

They say family always sticks together, but when you're your dad's only lifeline and the whole world - humans, dragons, and gods - wants you dead, "family bonding" takes on a whole new meaning. My name is Opal Yong-ae, and I'm in way over my head. I thought getting rid of my dad's bad luck curse would put things back to normal. Instead, I'm stuck playing caretaker to the Great Dragon of Korea. That wouldn’t be so bad if he wasn't such a jerk, or if every dragon on the planet wasn't out to kill him, or if he was my only problem.

Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap out of the audio, as skillfully animated as arcane revenants. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy. Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse.

Publisher's Summary
A Marla Mason novel! She's an ass-kicking sorcerer who doesn't wear a leather catsuit, doesn't suffer from low self-esteem, doesn't wallow in angst, and is almost always absolutely certain she's right... even when she's dead wrong. What about Broken Mirrors? It's got monsters. It's got sarcasm. It's got death, betrayal, ancient gods, dark doppelgangers, mirror worlds, wisecracks, artifacts, oracles, and magical daggers. Oh... and a cloak.

Marla's Age of ApocalypMason
A good series is like the perfect comfort food. You know more or less what you're going to get if you've been here before, and you take pleasure in that familiarity. The Marla Mason books are my comfort food. I love the wicked sense of humor and no-nonsense Marla provides, and I love the way Jessica Almasy reads her. I could be up for a dozen more adventures of this character.
Broken Mirrors finds Marla Mason at odds with her few friends and confidants as she attempts to do the impossible - resurrect her slain apprentice, Bradley Bowman. Resurrection turns out to be impossible, so Marla opts for the next best thing: removing a different Bradley Bowman from an alternate universe. Unfortunately for her, this has a couple of unexpected consequences: 1) The B-Bowman isn't so keen on being taken from the universe he was in, and 2) Marla's own alternate - the Mason, and her murderous associate Crapsy (alt. Rondeau) are also pulled into Marla's universe.
While our Marla and Rondeau take the B-Bowman back to his own universe, and agree to aide him in fighting a revolution, the Mason and Crapsy go on a killing spree that leads them all the way to an unprotected Fellport. In the Mason, Marla finds her most dangerous foe - a darker, more vicious version of herself. And I think it's probably the best villain of the series.
It really feels like Pratt was pulling out all the stops with this one. This was the first of the Marla books that he self-published, and I suspect he realized that it might very well have been the last (thankfully, it isn't). We see characters that we've gotten to know over the past four novels (and short stories) fall, which was more of a punch to the gut than I expected. On the other hand, traveling to the alternate universe and seeing a lot of characters that have appeared in and/or died in the previous books was a sheer joy. It's the Marla Mason equivalent of Days of Future Past or Age of Apocalypse (which Pratt said he read for "research." Yes, we all feel so much woe for how hard it must be on him to write these books.)
All in all, Broken Mirrors is as much fun as it could possibly be, and a must for fans of this series.

OMG! The best series EVER is back!
I'm a HUGE T. A. Pratt fan and was delighted just to be able to read this novel as an e-book! Now it's on Audible (and has the amazing Jessica Almasy reading it), and I'm over the moon! If you haven't tried the Marla Mason series and you love fantasy, you'll love this series. It fast, funny and smart. The dialogue is laugh-out-loud funny, and the originality of the world T.A. created never fails to surprise. How awesome is that! (Just remember to start with book 1 -- they're all great!)

Why the irrational anger at Rondeau???
I am only part way through this book but I am finding the latest annoying at best. Marla's Character seems to regress with each new book rather then grow. She comes across like a spoiled petulant child. I expected better. I enjoyed Jessica Almasy's narration of the first books but she seems to have changed her style in this book too and I am unclear as to why. For me a dissapointment so far hopefully the story improves.

Big shift from previous books.
I’ve been enjoying the characters and story so far, but was never crazy about the narration. In this book, the narrator took every character to overacted extremes that annoyed me through the whole book. I’ll buy the next one and hope it mellows out. The story in this one was a bit harder to follow and I liked Marla a lot less for how she dealt with Rondeau at the beginning.

Could have been good
I've read all the other books in this series up to this one. It took a bit to get used to the Marla Mason character in the first book, but she grows on you and I enjoyed them all. Unfortunately this is the one that really killed her for me. I could go on a page long rant here but basically, I couldn't believe that someone could be so self-centered and selfish to actually do everything she did in this book. She was like a child. She was completely uncaring about all the deaths she caused and refused to take responsibility for any of it. If I hadn't known better I'd have a hard time believing that she was the heroine of this story.
As a positive, if you can call it that, if the story had been tweaked a little it could have been quite good. Like if Marla had been home defending her city from invasion instead of creating the opportunity for one because of her own selfish interests.

All kinds of messed up!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Any day of the week. I am obsessed with Marla Mason.
Which character – as performed by Jessica Almasy – was your favorite?
Rondeau of course. I love her Rondeau voice, any time I hear it in other non-Marla Mason novels, I'm like, "aww Rondeau."
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Always.
Any additional comments?
This one was so disturbing. Loss such loss! But the premise is super cool and I wonder what my other dimensional Mar's would be like. Ending not cool by the way.

Too silly for me
Would you try another book from T. A. Pratt and/or Jessica Almasy?
NO!
What was most disappointing about T. A. Pratt’s story?
The characters were cartoonlike
Would you be willing to try another one of Jessica Almasy’s performances?
Yes. Her performance seemed overacted, but the story lent itself to that.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
I didn't finish it and that is rare for me.
