Story
In 1761, on a sunny day in September, a King and Queen met for the very first time. They were married within hours. Born a German Princess, Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz was beautiful, headstrong, and fiercely intelligent… not precisely the attributes the British Court had been seeking in a spouse for the young King George III. But her fire and independence were exactly what she, and her King, needed. Because George has secrets… secrets with the potential to shake the very foundations of the monarchy.

Publisher's summary
The fourth book in Julia Quinn's globally best-selling Regency-set Bridgerton Family series, now the inspiration for the Netflix series Bridgerton created by Shondaland. Welcome to Colin and Penelope's long-awaited story....
Everyone knows that Colin Bridgerton is the most charming man in London. Penelope Featherington has secretly adored her best friend's brother for...well, it feels like forever. After half a lifetime of watching Colin Bridgerton from afar, she thinks she knows everything about him, until she stumbles across his deepest secret, and fears she doesn't know him at all.
Colin Bridgerton is tired of being thought of as nothing but an empty-headed charmer, tired of the notorious gossip columnist Lady Whistledown, who can't seem to publish an edition without mentioning him. But when Colin returns to London from a trip abroad, he discovers nothing in his life is quite the same - especially Penelope Featherington! The girl who was always simply there is suddenly the girl haunting his dreams. When he discovers that Penelope has secrets of her own, this elusive bachelor must decide. Is she his biggest threat - or his promise of a happy ending?
Critic reviews
"Julia Quinn's Bridgerton books take all of the classic tropes we know and love...and gives them a thoroughly modern twist. I can't focus on anything else." (Stylist)

Enjoyable!
I enjoyed Penelope’s love story. I liked the fact that they were friends first and it turned into something more. The storyline was enjoyable. Colin knowing Pen was Whistledown and loving her for it after coming to terms with his own feelings. Out of the four books I still like Anthony and Kate’s love story the most. The spice wasn’t as spicy as the previous books.

Disappointing and contradictory
I found this Bridgerton novel very dull, repetitive and AWFUL in the way Colin Bridgerton treated Penelope. He manhandles her regularly, ‘tugging’ her, pushing her around or gripping her arm so tightly it bruises. For supposedly the easiest-going Bridgerton, he is frequently full of rage, jealousy, dismay - he’s not fun at all. Penelope goes from being an interesting woman at the outset to a meek and bidding lover and wife. There’s very little spark in this story, and it needs humour to counter the monotonous back and forth anxiety of the main couple, but lacks it. Left me cold!

I couldn't finish it
The character of Colin is very unappealing. Apparently he's charming and full of merit, loved by all.... but he's also cruel, confused, and very unpleasant at times. I enjoyed the Benedict book far more. Landor's reading was excellent.

OMG Loved it!!
Honestly, I went into this book blindly. I haven't read the previous Bridgerton books, only watched the Netflix series and I actually skipped Benedicts book in order to find out what's in store on the next season of the show. Most often, books can be very different from the TV adaptation but this was incredibly fit for purpose with the amount of dialogue in the book. Rosalyn does a fantastic job of narrating different characters and told the story really well. I'm so glad I listened to this one and will definitely listen to the rest now too.

best if this series
this is the, in my opinion, the best in this series and I have listened to book 5 so far. I preferred the lesser amount of sexual description in some other stories, many may not agree. I think the story was was more realistic and relatable. a general comment I would make in the series is that every Male sounds like a Bridgerton whether they are or not and this can be a bit confusing.

Again a joy to listen to....
After the disappointment of Book 3 I am delighted to report that Book 4 was much more enjoyable ....
again I noticed various repeats within the story ... which I find annoying and therefore I deduct one star ⭐️ from the story -
but by now I feel that the author Julia Quinn uses theses repeats as filler rather than continuing the story, which I hope won't be found in the next book .... as I love this series, but an author shouldn't think that the audience isn't following closely the story.

So Good!!!
I have to be honest, I got this to listen to as I am eagerly waiting on the new season which isn't out on Netflix until December and I'm too impatient for that. I may have spoiled it for myself but I know the book is slightly different than the series and that the show will have more twists than the book does. This is incredible! The romance, passion and the way it draws you in just as the show does but this is somehow much more enticing as imagining can be much better than just watching. And yes I will be speaking in the regal bridgerton voice from now on as I do when I binge the series over and over again and even from listening to this as the accents made me laugh especially the Scottish accent the voice actor did 😂 I would definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys the books or the show or just enjoys passion and romance (especially the s*xy stuff 🤭) I am so glad I purchased this.

Easygoing romance
I’ve never really been interested in listening to the Bridgerton book series. I think the Netflix show is good- well it’s a guilty pleasure for me. But I thought I’d give listening a go- in preparation for the new series this year. I think listening to this a wind down, guilty pleasure. Which is lovely because sometimes you just need that. The story isn’t the best but it’s full of romance and humour. The performance of great and overall I think it’s an easygoing listen, also great for anyone who enjoys regency/ historical romances!

Probably the most annoying of them all
The only exciting thing about this book was the uncovering of Lady Whistledown, even though I already knew who it was because of the Netflix series. Collin was quite annoying and child-ish throughout the book. I prefer the portrayal of Penelope in the Netflix series compared to the book.

Loved the ending
This book was set a little differently in the characters but still enjoyable all the same. The ending was graceful and delightful. I did enjoy the first three books more but this was a good story to continue the Bridgerton series. I look forward to the other books. Julia Quinn writes an easy style to listen to and you can follow the story well. Rosalyn Landor is excellent in narrating the books as always - love her style.

Bridgerton 4: Lovely Read
Very lovely to read and listen to. The story, for me, is the best of the last 3 books (first one for me, still the best). I like the way the characters stayed true to how they are, following the previous books, and the clear growth they've made in this instalment. I also find the LW plot exciting to the end. The Audible voices were also very helpful in assisting with the imagination of the characters.
Well done to Julia Quinn, to Rosalyn Landor and the rest of the voice actors. It's all in all, a very pleasant experience.

Penelope Deserved Better
I have binged the whole books at this stage and I have come to the conclusion that Penelope deserved better that Colin! She’s a super smart and curious girl who ends up being Colin’s editor while he’s off being a famous writer. He absolutely stole her life’s work and caged her into marriage. She should have become the famous writer in the end!
