Publisher's summary

Purple. The foundation of an influential trade in a Roman world dominated by men. One woman rises up to take the reins of success in an incredible journey of courage, grit, and friendship. And along the way, she changes the world. But before she was Lydia, the seller of purple, she was simply a merchant's daughter who loved three things: her father, her ancestral home, and making dye. Then unbearable betrayal robs her of nearly everything. With only her father's secret formulas left, Lydia flees to Philippi and struggles to establish her business on her own. Determination and serendipitous acquaintances - along with her father's precious dye - help her become one of the city's preeminent merchants. But fear lingers in every shadow until Lydia meets the Apostle Paul and hears his message of hope, becoming his first European convert. Still, Lydia can't outrun her secrets forever, and when past and present collide, she must either stand firm and trust in her fledgling faith or succumb to the fear that has ruled her life.

Transported Back to Ancient Thyatira

I have grown to love these Biblical times books by author Tessa Afshar. Though mostly fictional, they are based on real people in the Bible. Many times, those people have only a few words or verses to tell us about them. Ms. Afshar takes those verses and expands them to help illuminate the life of these people that are integral, even if only in a small way, to the Christian faith.

In this particular book, we meet Lydia as a young lady. Her father, a dye master and a widower, runs a successful business - but is not so successful at the bookkeeping side of it. Help comes after a near-tragedy - but is it the help Lydia's family needs? Or will this particular golden goose turn to brass? And what happens that Lydia is no longer in Thyatira when she meets Paul?

Reading novels such as these - or rather, listening to them - transforms history from dry and difficult to understand, to very much alive and relatable to life today. Ms. Rendah Heywood provides a believable voice for Lydia, and helps to bring her character not just to life, but makes it seem as though you are at Lydia's own feet, listening to her tell her story. She portrays emotion and drama with skill.

Ms. Afshar has once again done a fantastic job removing the barriers of time, and Ms. Heywood a marvelous job of portraying the story. When listening to this book, I found myself with baited breath more than once. I will definitely listen to this book again and again, and would absolutely recommend it.

The Acts of the Apostles Comes to Life!

Beautifully written and narrated. I so appreciate the opportunity to step inside the Biblical Narrative to discover the possibilities of faith and the ultimate joy the LORD has in store for us as we face the challenges of life.

So encouraging to live out my faith even more

While I usually don't enjoy Biblical fiction where the main character is an actual historical person as much as when they are entirely fictional and just interact with real people, this book is a unique exception for me. I absolutely loved this book about Lydia! Perhaps because we know so little about her, I really enjoyed this backstory and the trips I was able to make vicariously with her around the Roman empire. I loved meeting other early believers and found myself encouraged to live out my faith with acts of generosity even more than I currently do. Highly recommend!!

Great imagination

Great job in creating a story of Lydia that could be true and weaving in the teachings of Christ a long the way.
