Publisher's Summary

A revealing memoir and empowering manifesto - a voice for generations.

Rose McGowan was born in one cult and came of age in another more visible cult: Hollywood.

In a strange world where she was continually on display, stardom soon became a personal nightmare of constant exposure and sexualisation. Rose escaped into the world of her mind, something she had done as a child, and into high-profile relationships. Every detail of her personal life became public, and the realities of an inherently sexist industry emerged with every script, role, public appearance, and magazine cover. The Hollywood machine packaged her as a sexualized bombshell, hijacking her image and identity and marketing them for profit.

Hollywood expected Rose to be silent and cooperative and to stay the path. Instead, she rebelled and asserted her true identity and voice. She reemerged unscripted, courageous, victorious, angry, smart, fierce, unapologetic, controversial, and real as f*ck.

Brave is her raw, honest, and poignant memoir/manifesto - a no-holds-barred, pull-no-punches account of the rise of a millennial icon, fearless activist, and unstoppable force for change who is determined to expose the truth about the entertainment industry, dismantle the concept of fame, shine a light on a multibillion-dollar business built on systemic misogyny, and empower people everywhere to wake up and be Brave.

Includes two original songs by Rose McGowan.

Must read...

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I'd recommend this book to everyone. Buy it. Read it (listen to it). Give it to your daughters. Give it to your sons.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

What Ms McGowan has faced and continues to face is heart-breaking. That she has been able to come through all of that a little dented but standing strong is testament to her resilience.

Essential for Humans

I spent the whole day consuming this book and audiobook at the same time. More than a book, I see this is a vessel for truth in Hollywood. Fascinating, disturbing, honest and powerful. Also, Rose’s voice has always fascinated me through the years. It has this ethereal quality to it that I find part alluring part vulnerable. I recommend doing what I did. Listen, read, get the album planet9 and you won’t look at Hollywood or even Rose’s movies the same way.

Really interesting.

An interesting memoir of an intelligent woman. Worth listening to as an audiobook as her delivery is excellent. It made me laugh and get angry in equal parts. Rose pulls no punches, bravo!

A horrifying, seminal, stunning audiobook

The fact this is narrated by the author herself, gives it a raw power it might not have in paper form. This is Rose sitting with you and sharing her life; from being a child in an abusive cult, to a star in a male-centred industry. She shows you what it is really like to be an actress in Hollywood and emboldens women to resist, and BE BRAVE. One of the best audiobooks I have ever listened to.

Will change the way you view film and television, will make you examine the ways in which both influence your world view and will inspire you to really self examine.

Moving account of a survivor who should be heard.

I feel sad when those who interview Rose McGowan about this book, put a focus on the "details of the rape", because in wanting her to offer up this chance for perverts to get excited, they miss the deeper and more important message of the book.
But that's the media for you.
Not the brightest bunnies in the field.
The rest of the population will be fully aware of the change that Rose McGowan demands. And fully aware of why the change is needed.
Sorry - that does assume that the rest of the population has a moral code of their own, and has not had that moral code, replaced by the Hollywood moral code.
It takes intelligence to see the difference, and the media who interview her, just do not seem to be very intelligent.
That's sad.
But I think most people will enjoy this audio book very much.
And if they are intelligent, they will see the points she makes - the most interesting one being that Hollywood feeds you .. your own reality... so don't let that happen.
Its deeply sad that the reality that men are fed, is the fact that seeing a woman in pain is somehow erotic - but - while psycopaths are making films, while men who hate women are making the films, when pure evil is celebrated in films, then this sad version of reality will continue to spread.
Time to change says Rose McGowan. We CAN make a change, says Rose McGowan.
So tell us about being raped, says the brain dead media lady.... not getting the point at all.

A thought-provoking, challenging book

What a thought-provoking book, Rose narrates beautifully her side of the story and shows she is indeed brave to call Hollywood on its ludicrous treatment of women in the industry and further afield. Articulate to the hilt, Rose just speaks the truth that some will struggle to comprehend but most will identify with. An empowering read.

Great book. Fascinating life. Brilliantly told

I have to admit, I approached this book with a lot of trepidation - partly because the Rose McGowan I’ve seen on the news or in the papers can come across as uncomfortably intense. Perhaps especially if you’re English. But reading her story changed my opinion of her completely. For one thing, you realise where her intensity comes from. And it’s there for good reasons. But the revelation for me is that Rose McGowan a very brave and inspiring woman and much more relatable than you’d think. And she has a fascinating story - of survival, then success, then more survival and ultimately, as if emerging from a cocoon of trauma, abuse, shame and the false world of Hollywood, she unfurls into this absolutely praiseworthy person of huge courage. I used to find her very vocal activism a little wearying - but now I realise this is mainly due to the way the media reports her. But she’s actually very funny, wise and insightful. Now that I’ve bothered to find out more about her, I am in awe of the way she took Hollywood on. Seriously impressive. This is a book I want my 18 year old daughter to read. In fact this is a book every young woman should read.

Loved it!

I am not one for writing reviews. But I am making an exception on this book. I enjoyed the book from start to end as it kept my interest through all the heart ache I listened to - and even though my life has been different to the one I have just listened to - the themes have been the same. Just lately there is a difference in the world - I just hope it continues and doesn’t simply die out. Well done Rose x

Be Brave.

This memoir is heartbreaking and also very hard to put down. I used to be a fan of Charmed, I never knew about Rose before the show and didn't keep up with her after it. I am glad to see where she is now and that she is happy. My heart breaks for what she has gone through at the hands of various people throughout her life. It seems like an insane amount for one person to suffer through, but she made it out the other side and that is amazing. I admire her for speaking her truth and encouraging people to see past gender roles, and question the patriarchy.

Brilliant and Essential Listening

Brave is a brilliant masterpiece of a memoir by Rose McGowan. This incredible story is so intelligently articulated by Rose. It is at times heart warming and funny, and others devastating and sickening. Rose is the truest hero having overcome so much suffering and has then risen out of the ashes to become every woman's hero and feminist leader. This audible is essential listening.

On Topic. Relevant. Read it.

This audio edition includes a couple of Rose McGowan's new songs and covers the timespan of her life in great detail in regards to her life as an actress, being taken advantage of by Hollywood and being raised in a less than loving home life. She has endured countless forms of sexual assault during her life, way more than any person should have to endure. Her voice is powerful, her words full of strength. I admire the tenacity it has taken for her to deliver her story and call the machine out on its continued and systematic mistreatment, misrepresentation and undervaluing of women. This was a great read and really evoked a powerful emotional response from me. And I hope every man that takes a chance and reads this book gets a positive message from it, because although Rose's opinions sometimes take on a militaristic undertone, her words remain valid and she draws her passion from a place of truth, she has endured torture and has come out of it damaged. Not only is this book her trying to heal herself, it is her trying to heal Hollywood, to heal women and then to heal humanity of this disease we have all created and perpetuated.

Raw. Confronting. Empowering. Brave.

Rose McGowan has a very interesting story. A reminder that we each have our own history, and ability to choose to stand up for what we believe in. I recommend this book to anyone who has an opinion.

Eye opening

An interesting story which casts a spotlight onto the unhealthy workplace that is hollywood and the entertainment industry. I hope this book hasn't ruined my ability to enjoy movies & TV. I will not view actresses or movies quite the same after this. I gave it only four because at times it read like a journal, and she came across as a bit vein in her descriptions of how tough she sees her self. Not to say she isn't tough. But the voice came accruals as a bit adolescent. But then she is telling the story about her experience starting from childhood. All in all a very interesting book. Recommend.

Simply Fantastic.

An eye opening novel that makes you reflect and question. Rose has such an interesting story, which is at time heartbreaking, but also as a woman I connect with her. Her music that is included is also great. This novel has made me question how I view “stars” and Hollywood.
