Publisher's summary

When parents send their children off to college, Mom and Dad hope they'll return more cultivated, knowledgeable, and astute - able to see issues from all points of view. But, according to Ben Shapiro, there's only one view allowed on most college campuses: a rabid brand of liberalism that must be swallowed hook, line, and sinker.

In this explosive exposé, Ben Shapiro, a UCLA graduate, reveals how America's university system is one of the largest brainwashing machines on the planet. Examining this nationwide problem from firsthand experience, Shapiro shows how the leftists who dominate the universities - from the administration to the student government, from the professors to the student media - use their power to mold impressionable minds.

Fresh and bitterly funny, this book proves that the universities, far from being a place for open discussion, are really dungeons of the mind that indoctrinate students to become socialists, atheists, race baiters, and narcissists.

fine audiobook that does a good job of capturing bens style, can’t make up for terrible book

One of the worse books I’ve ever encountered, ben manages to put all the pretentiousness of a 16 year old virgin into 7 hours of complaining about “degeneracy” such as openly talking about sex and accepting gay people. Uses cherry picked examples to try and say every college is run pedophile, marxist, muslim, holocaust deniers, who wish to hunt down conservatives. Ben does not address what may have caused the left to have a grasp on academia and offers no theory on it. Only shows weak one off examples and manages to say chomsky is full of shit, in this garbage book chomsky could have written in a coma. Anyway it is very clear ben was a virgin when he wrote this as his disgust of sex or descriptions of it is hilarious. Play on 1.5x speed for the full ben shapiro experience

Definitely proves the title of this book

It covers the biases of liberal universities and the intolerance of conservative ideology. It is a fantastic book for actual free thinkers.

From 2010, but still current

I hadn't noticed that it was only the audiobook version of this book that was released in 2017. The actual book turned out to be from 2010. Which means that the examples given are from that political period as well, naturally.

Nevertheless, Shapiro has a sharp mind and the analysis he offers is still current when it comes to the political climate on American university campuses.

Narration was well-done, the narrator tried to at least somewhat "channel his inner Shapiro". However, I'd have preferred Shapiro himself, I believe his book would have benefitted extra from the unique speed and tone that are so characteristic of the author.

Disappointing

When I saw that the release date for this audiobook was 2017, I expected to expected to hear a discussion of white privilege, Antifa, and black lives matter among other topics. But this book was about John Ashcroft, George Bush, & the war in Iraq. It turns out that the book is copyright 2004, not 2017. I was misled. The audiobook was released in 2017. Before Amazon purchased Audible, I do not think Audible would have been deceptive like this. Very disappointed.

Unsubstantiated Mudslinging

The literary equivalent of mudslinging, very little is done to substantiate factually why people are being called idiots for the duration of the book- and oh, how many times that happens- and this serves as little more than a platform to prove how ideological young Mr Shapiro was at the time of this writing. The concept of bias is an important one; but this isn’t the way to bring it across.

A fine example of warped non-rational trolling

Only a truly ignorant person or one filled with hatred of rational thought could possibly swallow this trolling for money. If you stop at any point and think about the ideas and motivations of the type person that could write this you will realize that these people use prejudice, fear of intellectuals, fear of free thinking to line their pockets with the support of people the dupe. A fine example of the garbage that has been coming from the Whitehouse for four miserable years.
There is not a trace of empathy or even an attempt to understand in this “book”. It is so reminiscent of the rabid blathering of Rush Limbaugh it makes one truly wonder as to what kind of person could hate so many others and how, other than stabbing others in the back, they could have managed to feed themselves and possibly reproduces.
If you want a listen of the strategy of the genocidally insane that work against every attempt to bring “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” to the human race and attempt to save this oasis in space from thoughtless destruction, only then is this the book for you.

Reductio ad absurdum

Wanted to read a strong right leaning text. Every paragraph is basically just a set up to end with a reductio ad absurdum argument ridiculing leftist thought. He takes every leftist view and turns it into an extremist communist, leftist apologist, or environmental terrorist straw man. He does not once out up his own views or policy recommendations. Its just a patter of attacks on singled out straw man arguments for no apparent reason.

Should’ve just read the sample and gone about my day

Save yourself a credit and/or money, just listen to the sample. You don’t need 8 hours of listening to some dude whine about how liberals dominate universities (although it IS called “liberal arts” so...)

I agreed with the premise of the book which is why I bought the book in the first place but the author is a bit too emotional about the subject to present his argument objectively.

College students and parents alike do need to know that modern universities are institutions of liberal programming and that graduates nowadays all sound like left wing automatons parroting the same ideologues you typically see being touted by the likes of cnn and msnbc, however this book is extreme in the opposite direction with itself bordering on propaganda.

Essential Reading before Selecting a University

Any additional comments?

The author, Ben Shapiro, wrote this book when he was around age nineteen or twenty, really quite amazing. If you are planning to send your young skull full of mush to a university it would be a good idea for you and your kid to read this book before you choose a school — be an informed parent and consumer. There are many fine schools out there that do not go the route of liberal indoctrination, schools that instead teach the tools of critical thinking. Having these tools will give your kid an enormous advantage over those that have only the reflexive narratives of indoctrination and brainwashing.
