Story
Eric was born in a world governed by the Great System, in the family of Aren Bergman, a respected miner from Orchus. But the joy of gaining a son was overshadowed by the newborn's terrible affliction. Eric was completely nulled-level zero and no characteristics points. The only things keeping him from dying were his tiny base supplies of "life" and "energy". The medicine woman who delivered Eric believes this to be the work of the evil spirit, Bug. Due to the peculiar laws of the Great System, Eric cannot use experience essences or characteristics tablets.

It turns out, the "Demon Weed" actually is a gateway drug! Who knew? Tom Perkinje certainly didn't. He had never smoked anything in his life, but as the new kid in town trying to make friends, he foolishly let his new buddy Reggie talk him into trying a joint that he'd picked up from a new dealer. Before he knew it, Tom was having a seriously bad trip; a total out-of-body experience where the world had dissolved around him.

Story
The ancient magic of wizards was anything but dark. It was the enlightenment that lifted humanity from the squalor of superstition, and the worship of fell spirits and capricious gods, but those days are gone. The shining glory of the sorcerers burned away the subtlety of wisdom, replacing it with easy power, held only in the hands of the elite - a new age built upon the elemental supremacy of aristocrats and the ignorance of the masses.

Publisher's Summary
Ven Khalida is a land of magic and gods. Settlements abound, both large and small, each with a life of their own and hidden secrets.
Except Rottwealth. A backwater village, surrounded by mountains and ignored by most, nothing of merit ever leaves the valley. Aside, of course, from the mystical plant which shares its name. A plant that can heal even the most dire wounds in a matter of moments, and flourishes within the swamp that takes up part of the valley.
Ean Sangrave, a disgruntled Healer's apprentice barely in his twenties, wants to escape and start a new life outside of the village that hates him. If the village ever discovered Ean's ability to summon creatures from the Abyss - like his closest friend, Zin the imp - judgment would be swift and punishment final.
When an unconquerable monster takes residence in the new mine, the mayor's oldest son, Bran Erikson, is given the task of traveling to the capital city Lurthalan to seek help. To the surprise of the entire village, he chooses Ean to accompany him. But with a connection to a taboo god and a power he barely understands, can Ean fit into the world outside of his secluded village, or will the stigma that has been placed on him since birth follow him the rest of his life.

if it were a film it would rate PG13 possibly G.
A few more voices, and a bit more emotion, and the narrator will do well. He just needs experience. I get the impression that the book was written for a younger audience. a safe story that a publisher would buy to fill his printing quota.

Character is too stuck on his first love interest
The character never gets past his jealousy and it kinda ruined the book for me. The main character couldn't stop whining and wallowing in self pity which destroyed what over wise seemed like a good book. As long as you can get past what I couldn't the book is very interesting.

Don't fall down the pit
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
I think younger listeners might enjoy this, but overall, its not worth the credits.
Any additional comments?
Avoid getting started with the series. The storyline has some interest, but the reading and remaining elements of the story are weak. Maybe with more practice the author can improve with time, but the first two books are worth side stepping for awhile.

Disappointed
I skipped most of it because I got tired of feeling sad and pity for Ian. The village idiot in puppy love with a girl who loves someone else. It's pathetic for someone in their twenties so maybe the writer should've made Ian 15 or 16 years old. A lot of editing mistake and I didn't like the narrator. They never achieved their objective instead they made stupid mistakes and Ian gets into trouble without any thought.
