Acerca de esta escucha
On August 8, 2020, 40-year-old Stephanie Lincoln seemingly had the perfect life. She just had the wedding of her dreams, owned a successful business, and was traveling the country in an RV with her husband and 3 dogs. An innocent choice to go on a short hike in the Olympic National Forest became the catalyst for disaster. On that day, Stephanie officially became a missing person and the battle for her life ensued. Steph tells the tale of her harrowing effort to survive. Told with great suspense and style, Stephanie interweaves stories of the experiences she feels prepared her for this very moment in her life.
With her salty personality and sense of humor, Born to be Brave vividly captures the terrors and triumphs of one woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that took her to the brink of despair, and ultimately healed her. Steph’s journey, and the included perspectives from her friends and family, are an inspiring tale of persistence, resilience, and the power of belief. This book will make you consider the series of circumstances that can equip you to not only survive but thrive in a terrible life event. After listening to this book, you will feel like you were too, Born to be Brave.

Historia
In the summer of 1972, the open road beckoned best friends, nineteen-year-old Barry Johnson and twenty-year-old Bobby Young. Carrying backpacks with the essentials, staples of Kraft Mac and Cheese, dressed in jeans, Frye boots, with $100 each, they set off from their homes in Massachusetts. And so their cross-country adventure began during a time when the bond of trust between driver and hitchhiker was rarely questioned. Little did they know that this journey would shape their lives in ways they could never imagine.

Historia
The Meyer family of Beaver Dam Wisconsin were not your run of the mill group of kin folk. Being the daughter of the infamous Ruth and Russell Meyer back in the 60’s was a roller coaster of fun times and tragic events. As children, we had the best times with dad. Fishing, skating, him bringing home a monkey, wrestling a bear, and finding humor in everyday functions such as farting. I have fond memories of him. My dad was a hilarious and lovable character. But when he was drinking, he became extremely violent.

Honest and insightful
This book recaps a difficult situation the author experienced and its impacts on both herself and those around her. It is written very frankly, peppering it with laugh out loud moments that are so relatable intertwined with moments of deep emotion. I appreciated the various perspectives offered by the author’s loved ones. It’s both a memoir of the author’s life as well as the big event she lived through as well as encouragement to others for healing and processing through difficult situations. I laughed, I cried, I felt inspired by the end of it all. I’m proud of the author for deep diving and doing the work of writing this book to share with the rest of the world so that her experience could make an even bigger impact on the world.

Story of survival with lessons for all of us
I loved listening to this audio book! Narrated by the author, it takes you through three harrowing and dangerous days of her life lost in the Olympia forest. Stephanie has an amazing style of story telling making you feel like you are there with her through it all. She contextualizes her experience with life experiences before and after she got lost, showing the reader how all of us were “born to be brave.”

A biased opinion...
This is the author, so full disclosure, very biased review. If you like books written by Cheryl Strayed or Elizabeth Gilbert, this book is right up yoir alley. (Shout out to Cheryl whom I took a writers workshop with when writing this book and she is an amazing writing coach, btw!)
What is special about this book is the perspectives. In every adventure memoir, you only hear about the 1st person perspective. In my book, you hear the voices of my mom, my sister, my brother in law, the news media, my therapist, my husband, my friend, and even what perfect strangers said about me on social media. Trauma is not a single even that impacts one person. Trauma affects many. It flows out in a wave of impact from "patient zero" to many.
Another special thing about my book is the concept of it's title. The weaving in of expereinces from my life that I feel prepared me for those 56 hours battling for my life.
Thank you for taking the time to listen to my audiobook. I hope it provides you an entertaining listen and some thoughtful moments about how your own experiences have empowered you to be brave.
