Publisher's Summary

When Jo Brand hosted Have I Got News For You late last year, her calm explanation of the effects of sexism on women to a bemused all-male cast turned into a viral phenomenon.

There has been a whole tradition of books over hundreds of years where a father shares his wisdom with his son - started by Lord Chesterfield in the 18th century - while women have been silent (aka bullied into thinking their advice wasn't worth writing down). This book puts a stop to all that.

Ranging from your family and how to survive it to what no one tells you about the female body; from how not to fall in love to heckling as a life skill, Born Lippy gathers together the things Jo's learnt about the world, the things she wishes she'd known and the things she hopes for the future into a hilarious and highly useful guide to life that everyone female (and male) needs to hear immediately.

Packed with memorable anecdotes from her life and career, coloured by her experiences as a psychiatric nurse and working mother of two, this book will not only entertain but also really help people.

A surprisingly emotional experience

As a comedy fan, I expected this book to be a comedic retelling of Jo Brand's life, with her trademark acerbic tones and amusing anecdotes. Instead, I found incredibly useful and heartfelt advices for how to navigate the modern world, especially as a woman. How to stand up for yourself, how to react to verbal abuse, to flashers, to bullies, etc. There was even a section on what to do when you are bullied and you freeze up in terror, unable to say or do anything. As self-help books for women go, this book is so much more useful and practical than just "lean in". It helps the woman in a toxic relationship, the woman who got abused for how she looks, the woman who got flashed on the train, the woman dealing with a dead-end career and the woman preparing for a job interview. The advices are sobering, sometimes very grim and depressing, but they all come from a life well-lived. If I had daughters, I will pass these advices to them.

Uplifting (don't say empowering!) and fun

I agree with another reviewer that the delivery (at first) seems strangely flat, but I guess it's just because we're used to seeing Jo Brand in stand-up or in less scripted programs - I soon got used to her 'reading voice' and really enjoyed this book, I had more laugh out loud moments than I can remember having with any other audiobook, and also thought there was lots of good advice. Advice sounds too serious - but a good attitude to life that leaves you feeling positive and empathetic to yourself and others :)

Good thought provoking read

This is a really good read. It's very much a 'this is what life has taught me' memoir rather than a laugh-a-minute comedy book, and obviously I don't agree with her on everything, but it's very honest and thought-provoking. The delivery is strangely flat on the audiobook, though.

The lippiest of lippy women, great book!

I thoroughly enjoyed being kept company in my office by Jo Brand, reading me her latest book. Wonderful advice and some very personal anecdotes about her own life and that of her daughters. One for all women everywhere. You are definitely worth it!!

Vile/transphobic

I am...so disappointed to find out via this book that Jo Brand is transphobic. I've only ever watched her on panel shows and when I saw this in the Audible sale, I thought it might be a good listen - I was really wrong. Even before I got to the hate speech section there were so many parts that just didn't sit right with me, including plenty of mentions about Germaine Greer in a positive light (transphobic, rape apologist). It feels like Jo Brand has appointed herself the official spokesperson for all women and her attitude towards racism and ableism is all very 'this is so silly, let's all just be nice to each other and talk about our differences', which is disgusting and very flippant considering the horrendous way people of colour are treated. Just no. Horrible, awful book by somebody I will absolutely avoid in future.

Can't wait to listen again

Honest, thought provoking and insightful. Brimming with Jo's classic humour but also provides helpful advice based on her own experiences. It felt like I was out having a coffee with a hilarious aunt only too happy to share their life experiences.

Brilliant stuff!

Clever, kind and fantastically funny. This was a real pleasure on the first, second and third listens... Jo Brand has more sense than the majority of our rather dire species and she makes you laugh- what else do you need?!

no thanks

It was okay until it suddenly got TERFy. I just love finding out that people I previously respected are actually bigoted assholes.

A joy to listen to

Jo Brand shares some life insights, good advice and general common sense, whilst being completely honest and totally hilarious. Laughing out loud whilst in traffic is a definite side effect, you've been warned.

Play this to your daughters

A really thoughtful look at what it's like being a woman who grew up in the 60s/70s/80s hoping we'd see a brand new world, only to be slightly disappointed.
This book felt like a series of late night heart to heart chats amongst my strong, brave, (human) women friends over a few bottles of red. Thought provoking, affirming and humourous. Loved it all.
(Disclaimer: Just realised I listened to it all while doing various household chores. Sigh.)

Jo Brand is my new hero

Absolutely love this book. I had no idea how brilliant Jo Brand is, and think she is absolutely amazing. Her wisdom, her stories and humour draws you in and I will definitely be listening to this book twice. Love you Jo, you're a wonderful role model and I really appreciate that.
