Publisher's summary

Maren Yearly is a young woman who wants the same things we all do. She wants to be someone people admire and respect. She wants to be loved. But her secret, shameful needs have forced her into exile. She hates herself for the bad thing she does, for what it's done to her family and her sense of identity; for how it dictates her place in the world and how people see her - how they judge her. She didn't choose to be this way.

Because Maren Yearly doesn't just break hearts, she devours them. Ever since her mother found Penny Wilson's eardrum in her mouth when Maren was just two years old, she knew life would never be normal for either of them. Love may come in many shapes and sizes, but for Maren, it always ends the same-with her hiding the evidence and her mother packing up the car.

But when her mother abandons her the day after her 16th birthday, Maren goes looking for the father she has never known, and finds much more than she bargained for along the way.

Faced with a world of fellow eaters, potential enemies, and the prospect of love, Maren realizes she isn't only looking for her father, she's looking for herself.

Camille DeAngelis' Bones & All is an astonishingly original coming-of-age tale that is at once a gorgeously written horror story as well as a mesmerizing meditation on female power and sexuality.

Movie is actually better

I wanted to read this after seeing the movie and thinking there had to be more. However, despite some good ideas it really remains pretty shallow. This had the opportunity to explore some deep characterisations but generally remains very predictable and superficial. A strong start is lost by a very meandering, vanilla finish. The performance is solid. Each character felt unique and there was never a worry understanding who was talking.

It's a quick read, though, and I don't feel like it was a waste. I just wanted a bit more depth to the culture presented.

Hungry anyone

I can honestly say I bit into this story. It’s a love story redefined. Not you’re typical girl meets boy and he’s a supernatural being cause he’s not. But What they are is something much worse.
All I have to say is this book is gory but I don’t read anything unless it’s got substance and it definitely does. I think Camille DeAngelis does a wonderful job as you the reader learn from the Pov of Maren. If you are to read it based on my review, make sure you have a strong stomach.

Just WOW!

Great storytelling! Wanted to read the book, before the film. Did not disappoint. My only lingering thoughts, how were these people not creatures or superhuman, to be able to eat others, bones and all, when human teeth aren't really capable of this?
