Publisher's Summary

The Crozats feared that past murders at Crozat Plantation B&B might spell the death of their beloved estate, but they've managed to survive the scandal. Now there's a très bigger story in Pelican, Louisiana: the upcoming nuptials between Police Chief Rufus Durand and Vanessa Fleer.

Maggie Crozat, inexplicably tasked with being Vanessa's maid of honor, quickly discovers why everyone else refused the assignment when the bridezilla hands her a long list of duties - the most important of which is entertaining Vanessa's cousin, Ginger Fleer-Starke, a mysterious woman with dangerous secrets. But just days before the wedding, Ginger's lifeless body is found on the bayou behind Crozat Plantation. Now the Pelican PD and the Crozats have another murder mystery on their hands.

There's a gumbo pot full of suspects, including an ex-marine with PTSD, an annoying local newspaper reporter, and Vanessa's own spark plug of a mother. But when it looks like the investigation is zeroing in on Vanessa as the prime suspect, Maggie reluctantly adds keeping the bride-to-be out of jail to her list of maid-of-honor responsibilities.

Fun not noir!

cozy-mystery, family-dynamics, friendship, usa, law-enforcement, murder, recipes, laugh-out-loud

What fun! The impending bride and her mother are nutz, the bride's cousin makes the mob look honest, Maggie is worried about problems with her boyfriend, and then there's the murders. The characters certainly are, the setting is marvelous, the plot twists are unexpected, and the herrings are all red. There is no problem for a reader who dives into this one without reading the other, and no problem should you also discover that you bought this one a while ago but it got legs and walked off before you even read it!
Well this time I got the audio. Meredith Mitchell does a fantastic narration.

Stereotypes and doormats

Not a few of my favourite things

Maggie is a doormat. There's polite, and there's being a doormat. Van is a bundle of negative stereotypes.

The other characters are a lot more enjoyable than Van and Maggie. The storyline is good, I think. I can't be sure because Maggie's annoying behaviour interferes. Was she this drippy in Plantation Shudders? Give her some strength and make Van less cartoonish, and I believe the story could be 4-star.

Great adventures on bayou

This novel has a wonderful perspective of those who live in the plantation region of Louisiana. Ellen Byron keeps one interested in colorful characters who have the support of family and friends. 'she is also able to keep the real reason for the murder under wraps until the end. She provided you with the desire to go spend a weekend at the B&B just to meet the characters. Can't wait for the next book in the series to come out.

Ok

This is an entertaining story but unrealistic. Maggie proves to be a doormat over and over. After a while, that gets annoying.
