Publisher's summary

A long-buried family secret resurfaces when one of Aloysius Pendergast's most implacable enemies shows up on his doorstep as a murdered corpse. The mystery has all the hallmarks of the perfect murder, save for an enigmatic clue: a piece of turquoise lodged in the stomach of the deceased. The gem leads Pendergast to an abandoned mine on the shore of California's desolate Salton Sea, which in turn propels him on a journey of discovery deep into his family's sinister past. But Pendergast learns there is more at work than a ghastly episode of family history: he is soon stalked by a subtle killer bent on vengeance over an ancient transgression. In short order, Pendergast is caught in a wickedly clever plot, which will leave him stricken in mind and body...and may well end with his death.

Critic reviews

"Preston and Child have created a terrific mix of mystery and the unexpected that will keep you reading into the late hours of the night. They promise a great read and they have delivered." (Clive Cussler)

Pretty lame story

I'm a fan of this series so I guess I'll always buy the latest instalment, but I feel like Preston & Child didn't put much effort into this one. Very predictable plot, totally implausible ending. Much of the scenes were straight out of other books & for the first time I found myself skipping forward.

So, so good!

Great plot, great characters, great performance! Now I need to go in search of other books by this author--I hope there are many more!

Pendergast and Auberjonois

Would you listen to Blue Labyrinth again? Why?

Like all mysteries the story has an ending which would be diminished in a re-reading.

What did you like best about this story?

Imagery from previous novels in the series return to tighten the horror.

Have you listened to any of Rene Auberjonois’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, and he is always a pleasure to hear. A fine actor brings a lot to an audiobook. If I see his name on a book, I go for it.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Close to it, but just don't have the time.

enjoyable read.

this book is a fun traverse back into Pendergast's world. adding Margo and Vinny just makes it all the better. although I do wish the guys would go back to what created this following. creatures, suspense, fantastic mystery. no more humdrum murders or Nazi subplots.

Best since Two Graves

Best since Two Graves. Rene brings the quirky style to Pendergast that you imagine of such a character.

classic and graceful thriller

How excellent it is to be entertained by a tale that provides thrills and exciting reading without resorting to vulgarity and commonness to entice ones participation. A touch of class and grace wrapped around an intelligent intriguing mystery, how unique in this day and age. They never fail to provide a superior read, do they... thank you, gentlemen. Loved it.

Pendergast is getting old

IMHO, This wasn't the best in this series. However it is certainly worth a listen, the series is better than most at obscure arcana at Shamalaian plot twists.

The same but different

Enjoyed the faster pace and straightforward movement through the story of this book versus others in this series. Good listen

Good Stuff

I enjoyed this sprawling story. Rene A was a good choice for the narrator. Good story, okay character development, and a good Constance butt kicking chapter.
