On March 21, 1937, Puerto Rico witnessed a harrowing event that left an indelible mark on its history. Known as the Ponce Massacre, this tragedy unfolded on Palm Sunday when a peaceful march for independence spiraled into unimaginable violence. This Blood on Palm Sunday recounts this event, exploring the colonial repression, the rise of nationalism, and the resilience of a people fighting for dignity and autonomy. Set against the complex political backdrop of the early 20th century, this book delves into the underpinnings of the independence movement in Puerto Rico. It follows the buildup of tensions as Nationalist leaders, influenced by global anti colonial movements, rallied Puerto Ricans towards self-determination. With firsthand accounts and rare historical documentation, Alex Alicea uncovers the premeditated nature of the crackdown ordered by colonial authorities, exposing the calculated brutality that led to the deaths of unarmed civilians, including women and children. Blood on Palm Sunday is more than a historical account; it’s a tribute to the spirit of resistance that fueled Puerto Rico’s struggle for justice. Listeners will be drawn to the emotional depth of the tragic story of a 7 year old girl lost in the massacre, and the powerful last words of a dying activist who used his blood to write, "Long live the Republic, Down with the Murderers." Alex Alicea’s narrative invites listeners to witness the transformation of grief into resolve, inspiring a renewed understanding of Puerto Rican identity and the ongoing quest for self-determination. This book is essential for listeners passionate about history, social justice, and the fight against oppression. Blood on Palm Sunday not only brings to light a lesser known chapter of Puerto Rican history but also resonates with contemporary struggles for autonomy. Discover the unfiltered truth of the Ponce Massacre and gain insight into the enduring resilience of Puerto Rico’s people by diving into this powerful narrative.

Admittedly, I didn’t know much about Puerto Rico until the Super Bowl. (Beyond basic details) It sparked a whole rabbit hole of research trying to learn more about this island.

This book was really great and a fairly short listen even though it was packed with info- I loved how the intro got straight into Ponce Massacre and then Chapter 1 and the rest of the book goes back in time to talk through the history of what brought it on. I felt like this gave me a little preview and insight into why the story I was about to hear was relevant.

The book itself is clear. I appreciate that the author took efforts to discuss the events themselves while also describing the cultural chatter, how residents organized themselves, direct quotes from leaders, and aligning laws happening at the time. I think they were also really fair when talking about things where there is debate.

I learned a lot- I had no idea that Puerto Rico could fly their own flag for a time. I didn’t realize how much silencing of the people had occurred when Puerto Ricans were looking for independence.

My only criticism was the narrator was a bit difficult in some places as the rhythm didn’t sound natural. It didn’t prevent me from listening, but there were a couple portions where the words felt robotic.

Tons of info, complete with the entire timeline
