Publisher's summary

Officially, 17-year-old Anya is dead. Unofficially, she's in New Orleans with minimal recollection of the night her mobster parents were murdered, and even less recollection of how she ended up in the hands of a shady nightclub owner.

After weeks of failed attempts, Anya escapes with help from the son of the city’s most notorious crime boss. Using his father and his connections to produce official documents, Anya proves she is who she says, despite the death certificate, and begins to teeter the lines between avenging her parents and earning the trust of the crime family protecting her.

When Anya’s uncle quietly resurfaces, he deems her more useful dead, and refuses to entertain her desire to piece together what’s left of their family. He threatens to destroy her relationships with the members and heirs of the crime family unless she becomes his personal assassin and spy.

Refusing to be a pawn, Anya forges her own path into the bloody criminal underworld to secure what’s left of her family’s empire before her uncle kills her—or before she kills him—all while navigating a blooming romance with the boss’s desperate-for-peace son, avoiding the detective that has his sights set on the family, and racing to ensure she’s exacted her revenge on those responsible for her parents deaths once it’s revealed to the world that her casket is empty.

YA mafia romance

I listened to the audiobook versus reading the book. There were a lot of characters to keep up with. It was hard listening to the book to keep all the characters straight except for the 2 main characters Anya and Liam. Add in there were 5 mafia families it's a lot of characters to keep up with. Anya always seems to be drifting from one place to the next and staying with a lot of different people. If I read the book, keeping all the characters straight may have been easier. Anya is 17. Anya wakes up and doesn't know where she is and has trouble remembering. Anya finds out her parents are dead and so is she. Anya's uncle reaches out but is he trying to help or harm Anya? Anya quickly realizes the only person she can really trust is herself. Anya has to make her way in this mafia world. The book takes place mostly in New Orleans and a little in New York. Along the way she falls for Liam when before she had a relationship with a female. Anya has to sort out what is the truth. Can Anya live up to her family's legacy? I think Liam was so nice because he didn't really want to follow in his families footsteps and legally he was in trouble himself. I liked the added detail of the feather. There is pretty much non stop action and a lot of twists and turns.

Mafia Princess Exploits

This was my first experience with B. Nacole's work, and it was a fascinating debut novel. This audiobook was so exciting that I had to listen to it in one sitting. Anya woke up not knowing where she was, how she arrived there, and with some missing memories. Anya struggled to recover her lost memories and to figure out what had happened as according to public records she was dead. I was entertained by the characters, but they didn't seem real. Anya went through a lot, both physically and mentally, but she bounced back in a non-realistic way. Liam was too sweet a character considering his family's business. Overlooking the unrealistic characters, the action was pretty much non-stop. There were plenty of twists and turns that kept me guessing as to what would happen. Amy Hall's narration was fine, and her performance kept my attention. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review.
