Publisher's summary

Twenty years after the war that overthrew the Great Guilds, the Empire is vowing to avenge the massive defeat of the Imperial legions at Dorcastle. Aiding the Imperials are renegade Mechanics and Mages still loyal to the old Guilds or employed by the Empire.

But before they can launch an all-out war, the Imperials must eliminate a major threat: Kira, daughter of Master Mechanic Mari and Master of Mages Alain. Kidnapped and imprisoned, Kira has to escape and avoid recapture as the full might of the Empire is aimed at her. Her only hope lies in the skills she has mastered; her indomitable spirit; and the unfailing aid of Jason, her boyfriend from the distant world of Urth.

With the Imperial legions closing in and thousands of lives riding on her efforts, Kira has to use every weapon available to her, including special abilities she has kept secret until now - abilities that may prove to be as dangerous as the enemy forces. Mari and Alain must come to Kira's aid and work to create an alliance against the Empire.

If they fail, a deadlier new war will erupt, with every soldier carrying a rifle instead of a sword or crossbow - and the Peace of the Daughter will end in a bloodbath.

A solid continuation

This a good middle of the trilogy! The characters have grown a lot from the beginning of the first book. There are parts in the middle of the book that got a bit long, but I would still give it a solid 4.5. Definitely a keeper.

More Danger

Kira, daughter of Master Mechanic Mari and Master of Mages Alain, meets someone who just does not understand no. Once again Kira and Jason must work to escape before they are captured or killed. As the story follows Kira and Jason it also gives insight into what Mari and Alain are feeling as they have to let someone else deal with the danger to Kira. There is a lot of excitement and tension in the story. There is also the budding romance between Kira and Jason. One set of danger is resolved. What is left unresolved is what happens to Kira when she uses her Mage Skills. That will be resolved in the next book. MacLeod Andrews does a good job on the different voices in the story and puts just the right amount of feeling and tension where needed.

Another winner!!

I love this storyline the characters are relatable and fun, it is great to see a storyline in which the hero is female, strong and human. The story is well written and the use of imagery on point. It is neither totally cerebral or exhaustingly action packed, a good balance. I also like that is not full of foul language or sex. It just proves that a good story, one that doesn't leave you needing a shower, can be well written. Well done done Jack. And lest I forget, it doesn't matter how good the story is if it isn't narrated well it will die a rapid death. I predict a long life for this story!!!

Can I Live on Dematr Too?

There's no question that I'll read everything Jack Campbell publishes. But I had mixed feelings when the Legacy Trilogy began because I loved the first series so much and I was sad to see those characters mostly relegated to the sidelines. However, I quickly got over that with this second book. It moved quickly, contained lots of action, cooled the tension with much-needed light moments, and ended satisfactorily yet with several unresolved questions. But I got so HUNGRY!

A few little things: I am still warming up to Jason but he's growing on me. There was more of Mari, but not enough of Alain, or other familiar characters. There were too many arid mountains. A few of the older generation characters got to evolve, which was satisfying, but others were just backdrops for the younger generation as they raced frantically around the countryside.

McLeod Andrews is by far my favorite narrator and he did a great job this time. Only once did I get confused, but there was a lot going on.

I eagerly await the next book, but with some trepidation, since this is a trilogy. I don't want to be without Dematr in my life!

Is the second in the series...

Did you like the first book? If so you'll like this one, more magic, tech/steam-punk, more of the two main characters. I enjoyed the character growth, nothing was so far fetched as to be impossible to believe and it sets up nicely for the third book.

If you haven't read the first one, go grab that, the second one doesn't make sense without the first.

If you read the first and you're not sure about this one, bear in mind it is an extension of the last book. Would you have wanted that book to be longer? If so you'll probably like this, if not then the first one makes for a nice one-off story.

a great example of how to write a middle

I really enjoyed this book, this book was a fine example of how to grow characters without making something so epic and scale that anything came after it paled in comparison..

as normal with audible Studios the narration was fantastic

ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC. I LIVE THIS SERIES. WELL,WRITTEN AND PERFORMED

Another great addition to the series. Kira is maturing and her relationship with Jason is growing splendidly. I love the interactions between them and they are united in their actions to come out of their problems. Maxim is truly a vile creature and he portrays the characteristics that is most disgusting. Macleod Andrews is an excellent narrator/performer and the actions and tensions throughout the book is quite well done. Jack Campbell is as always is a talented writer. I hope the next book will,be published soon. Well worth waiting for!

great story sad to end

The story seemed to go by very fast. I can't wait for part 3! The series is fantastic! I gave the story 4 out of 5 because the setup for the conclusion was not well developed.

thanks

Robert
