How far would you go to clear the name of the man convicted of your son's death?

Red blood stains the red soil of the Australian Northern Territory in this true crime Audible Original Podcast, Blood Territory.

Less than 250,000 people live in the Northern Territory, an area more than twice the size of Texas. If you want to escape from civilisation, you don't have to go far. But you can't outrun the heat. Every year during October and November the sweltering climate can drive people wild; they call it "˜Suicide Season', "˜Mango Madness' or, more plainly, "˜The Build-up'.

It's during this blistering heat that Jim O'Connell's body is found in a creek bed, mummified and with his genitals removed. But when a dubious plea deal buries the truth and puts Jim's best mate, Philip Mather, behind bars for the crime, the victim's parents seek to unravel it themselves to prove Philip's innocence.

Follow journalist Mark Whittaker's journey into the murky heart of the Northern Territory as allegations of police corruption and judicial racism emerge and a shadowy figure known as The Vigilante lurks on the fringe of the investigation.

Thoughtful Aussie true crime

I liked this podcast a lot. It took us through a murder of young man in northern Australia and the conviction of his friend a aboriginal man. A murder that the victims family doesn’t believe was committed by the person they convicted. This podcast looked to get to the bottom of a complicated case that involves many shady players with the cops at the top of the suspect list.

If you enjoy true crime this should be on your listening list!

Gripping

I found this podcast to be a compelling, creepy and gripping examination of the murder of a young man in the Australian Northern Territory. The journalist details a very thorough study of all the characters involved and sums up nicely at the start of each episode to help recap. I binged it on a long drive and it easily aided in the drive with its compelling story arcs. Highly recommend. That said, the podcast concludes while leaving open a few remaining questions -- SPOILER ALERT - why was the man found naked, why were his genitals mutilated, who is the owner of the single flip flop? The journalist fails to tie up these loose ends and my assumption is - he does not know the answers to these questions. My heart goes out to the family of Jimmy ~ may they one day find peace.

Well That was a waste of time.... SPOILER ALERT

4 hours of noisy background sounds, horns, traffic, drums etc which made it really difficult to listen to. I was all for giving up, but got hooked into hanging on to hear the vital piece of evidence that cleared the guys name and proved his innocence! Well that was a bit pointless, in the summing up, he made a few inaccurate statements contradicting earlier statements, then came to the conclusion that there WAS no conclusion of innocence!

Intriguing

So addictive and well done... I however still have seen huge ignored questions like, for example, the autopsy findings do not correlate with the supposed mode of murder. Shame

nothing to see here.

drug taking criminal beats another drug taking criminal to death.police investigate, two witnesses come forward. criminal pleads guilty. serves time. author looks for conspiracy or miscarriage of justice, finds none. the end. but an interesting insight into a dysfunctional society in that part of Oz.

More than a mystery A journey into people's lives

I enjoyed this immensely, the narration was captivating and I really feel I went on a journey. do I have a definitive conclusion... No but I feel I will be thinking about this for a while. I feel there have been a good few audible podcast with a similar feel like west cork, ghosthunter and John safran VS the occult. I do hope there are more of the same in audibles future.

Fascinating

I've never been to this part of Australia - the Northern Territory - but Mark Whittaker paints a wonderful picture of it's landscape, the people, and the heat, demonstrating its beauty and it's dangers. I enjoyed listening to this podcast and getting to know the characters involved and joining Mark in his investigation to find out what happened to Jimmy O'Connell.

? miscarriage of justice in Oz

Continuing prejudice causing opacity of the facts. A very good listen about interesting people and the difficulty of solving a real life who-done-it.

First Podcast...Success!

First time listening to a podcast but it was free and with what I've been spending on Audible lately thought it would kill some hours on the drive. First episode, first 5 mins and thought well I've tried it back to my next book. End of episode 1 and I was intrigued. So told myself just on the city part of my drive. By episode 5 I was sure he deserved it. By episode 6 I thought he was guilty. By episode 9 I was thinking the police got it wrong. Like a great page turned I couldn't switch it off and this is testament to the wonderful narration, very clever storytelling and I really loved the production elements throughout. It was like listening to a great soundtrack. Maybe this is what all podcasts are like - I look forward to finding out. A great murder mystery with lots of twists and turns to keep you hooked. Well done!

An honest delve into the real world of Whodunit

The writer starts with a strong sense of injustice, but managed to maintain an open mind.

An Eye Opener From A Different Perspective

I lived less than 5 minutes drive from the murder scene. There are some eerily accurate theories put forward by the author but quite a few pieces of information he missed. Not due to lack of investigation but more to do with talking with the right people at the right time.

Officer X is known to me. There are some very good reasons why he's no longer serving in the NT Police force. I'm not on friendly terms with him. Despite the author's conclusion that police were likely incapable of committing such acts, I wholeheartedly beg to differ.

Regardless, this series was a thoroughly enjoyable listen. Highly recommended. If the author wishes to reach out, I'm more than willing to talk anonymously.

Easy to listen to and interesting investigative reporting. Would recommend.
Only thing would be better if it was 1 download so it continued to play right through.
