Publisher's Summary

In the seventh book of the internationally best-selling series by crime queen Lynda La Plante (Prime Suspect), newly promoted DCI Anna Travis takes charge of an investigation for the first time. But is it purely a missing person's case - or a full blown murder inquiry?

An ominous pool of blood and no victim lead Anna on a desperate hunt for a man who has disappeared without a trace. As Anna becomes obsessed with seemingly irrelevant details, her superintendent fears that she is losing control. With no body there is no case, and Anna is under increasing pressure to make an arrest.

Pretty good story

I'm a huge fan of Lynda LaPlante's cinematic writing style. Prime Suspect, starring the incomparable Helen Mirrren, is still one of my favorite TV experiences: good story-telling, excellent characters and lots of character development. Anna Travis is another good character - flawed and human, trying to figure out how to have a personal life when the job occupies all of her mental and physical energy. The book opens with Anna back at work after the brutal murder of her fiance. Distracted and depressed, she lands her first murder case as a newly minted DCI. Her former lover and current DCS, James Langton, looks over her shoulder too much for my liking; however, Anna manages to solve the case with her team. The plot is quite convoluted and probably didn't need to be. The performance was great. In all, it isn't a fantastic story but it was good to check in with Anna again.

Superb!

Held me to the end. There were lovely twists and turns. What seemed red herrings , weren't. The puzzle was nicely pieced!

Good mystery

Pretty good mystery crime storyline.
I felt more could of been done with developing the characters,, I really don't like Anna and I don't plan on continuing with this series.. she is a cold hearted unpleasant, flat character.

Enjoyable but problematic

I enjoyed this book but I found many descriptions homophobic. There are comments and lines that really needed more editing. The mystery unfolds well but it’s very dated.

beware narrator

Terrible narration...high pitched, gritty female, horrid male. Listen to sample. Though the story is good, it's hard to listen for any substantial length of time.

Loved it!

Another engrossing book in the Anna Travis series by Lynda La Plante! British murder mysteries are the best, and La Plante is a great writer of police procedurals. I love the details and descriptions of the locales, etc. Absolutely makes the story come to life.

Enjoyable but not the best

I enjoyed this book but the narration seriously let it down. Again the development of the character of Anna and DCI Langdon is nice to see Ive read several of these books so feel it is a follow on and quite welcoming to slip back into the story. I would recommend these books but this one is not one of the better offerings.

Excellent twisty crime novel

This is an excellent novel, worthy of Lynda La Plante and most enjoyable. This twisty tale brings out the character of Anna Travis and Langton very well. This novel is well worth a listen which is why I have given it five stars. However, I personally am not keen on the way the reader goes from very quiet to very loud in the same paragraph.
